Pomegranate- Is This The Next Big Health And Skincare Breakthrough?

POMEGRANATES

Often used as a staple ingredient in fresh juice or sprinkled liberally over spinach salads, the juicy pomegranate is officially known by its scientific name Punica granatum. While the exotic fruit is native to Iran and grown in both the Mediterranean and northern India, pomegranate is now a common sight in the supermarket produce aisle.

Although you may have savoured the tempting, gem-like seeds of this fruit, you be unaware of its numerous health and skincare benefits. In fact, pomegranates are packed with powerful antioxidants known as flavonoids and polyphenols which are known for their heart-healthy benefits.

According to family physician and nutritional expert Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a single glass of pomegranate juice contains more antioxidants than red wine, green tea, blueberries and cranberries. Pomegranates are also said to support the immune system, lower high levels of blood pressure and offer anti-cancer properties.

If you’re hoping to revitalize your skin as we settle into winter temperatures, pomegranate may also be a breakthrough skincare ingredient. In fact, the fruit can nourish the skin due to its levels of Vitamin E, which provides protection from the sun’s harmful rays and keeps free radical damage under control. As well, the Vitamin C in pomegranate is said to maintain the look of healthy, youthful skin which is wrinkle-free.
