August has really been a tough month at the box office, with no movie coming out on top to claim the month as theirs. The profits Hollywood saw in June and July haven’t really carried over into August. This week there are three new flicks, a depression era gang movie, a horror movie and a comedy. It’s a mixed bag for sure, and with the long weekend in front of us they could all bomb.

The summer blockbusters continue coming this week with a couple of movies that may or not not be able to overcome last week’s champ Madagascar. The one with the best chance is relying on Tom Cruise’s popularity and ability to sing. The other stars the reigning Golden Raspberry king Adam Sandler. That leaves an Ethan Hawke thriller as the final new flick this weekend.

The Avengers lost their top spot two weeks ago to Men in Black 3, and Snow White and The Huntsman took the top spot last week, and it appears as if another movie will be number one this week. Ridley Scott returns to a science fiction favourite series for the adults, and a cartoon franchise returns for a third time for the kids, both of which will probably make box office gold.

The big question this weekend is will The Avengers cross the $100 million threshold once again, or will one of the four new releases give it too much competition. There’s another action blockbuster opening (this time based on a board game), two romantic comedy (one of which is based on a true story) and a new comedy from the mind that brought you Borat.

Is there really any doubt which movie will take the top spot this weekend? Shockingly the latest superhero action flick isn’t the only movie opening this weekend, but no other movie will be talked about more. The Hunger Games may be the top grossing movie so far this year, but The Avengers will surely challenge that beginning this weekend.

Nothing seems capable of beating The Hunger Games for the box office crown, and the four new entries at theaters this weekend don’t stand much of a chance either. There’s a new romance, a comedy, and two documentaries just in time for Earth Day.

This week three new movies hit theaters everywhere, but will any of them have what it takes to knock off The Hunger Games? There’s the return of a legendary comedic team (sort of), a horror movie and an action sci-fi thriller coming out, and it’s doubtful any of them have what it takes to claim box office gold.
