Baz Luhrmann Moves Forward With Elvis Biopic, Casts His Priscilla Presley
Director Baz Luhrmann’s unnamed Elvis biopic has found its Priscilla Presley. It was announced over the weekend that 21-year-old Australian actress Olivia DeJonge has signed on to play the King’s famous wife.
DeJonge is best known for her role in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2015 horror film The Visit and the Netflix series The Society. Elvis first met Priscilla in the late 50’s when she was 14 years old, and known as Priscilla Wagner. She moved in with him at his Graceland compound in 1963 and the pair were eventually married in 1967. The following year they have a daughter, Lisa Marie, and ended up divorcing in 1973.
Luhrmann co-wrote the script for the film, and Austin Butler has already been signed to play Elvis. Tom Hanks is also involved with the production, playing Elvis’s manager Col. Tom Parker. The film is primarily focused on Parker and Elvis’ relationship, and is set to hit theaters on October 1st, 2021.
Deadline was the first to report the casting of DeJonge, and in a quick soundbite with the magazine Luhrmann said “Olivia is capable of manifesting the complex depth and presence that has made Priscilla Presley an icon in her own right. She’s an extremely talented young actor and the perfect counterpoint to Austin’s Elvis.”
