Room And Schitt’s Creek Leads Canadian Screen Awards 2016 Nominations
The 2016 Canadian Screen Awards nominations were announced yesterday, with the Oscar-nominated Room and Schitt’s Creek leading the way. First given out in 2013 as a merger of the Gemini Awards and Genie Awards, the fourth installment of the program is set to air on March 13th with new host Norm Macdonald taking over for Andrea Martin who hosted last year.
Room has had quite a year, not only did it win the People’s Choice Award at last year’s TIFF, but it received 4 Oscar nominations last week, actress Brie Larson won a Golden Globe for her performance, and now it leads the film contenders in nominations at the CSAs with 11. The Irish-Canadian co-production is adapted from the novel by London, Ontario based author Emma Donoghue, and earned nomination for screenplay, best motion picture, and for its two leads Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay. Paul Gross’ gritty war story Hyena Road earned eight nomination, and the French-language drama Our Loved Ones (Les êtres chers) had seven.
On the television side of things, Schitt’s Creek staring SCTV alum Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara led with 14 nominations in total, including Best Comedy. The series was created by the father and son team of Eugene and Dan Levy, and is about a well to do family forced to live in a small community. Close on their heels however is the popular sci-fi series Orphan Black with received 13 nominations. The Tatiana Maslany led show has typically done extremely well at the CSAs. Other top nominated shows include the police drama 19-2 and the comedy Mr. D with 12 nominations, and the miniseries The Book of Negroes with 11 nominations.
Former host Martin Short will receive a special tribute during the show as well, and be honoured for his exceptional contribution to the Canadian film and TV industries over his lifetime.
