Tom Hanks’ Top Film Roles

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg team up for a fourth time for this weekend’s Bridge of Spies, and we wouldn’t be shocked if they decide to make a fifth go of it in the future. For Bridge of Spies, Hanks plays a lawyer who is recruited by the CIA to help rescue a pilot detained in the Soviet Union. It’s based on a true story, and is all ready being looked at as a possible award contender. Tom Hanks has made many incredible movies throughout his career, and won two Oscars along the way, which makes choosing his top roles that much harder. Here are the ones at the top of our list.

In Philadelphia Hanks plays a man with AIDS who is fired by his law firm, who hires the only willing lawyer to represent him in an unlawful dismissal case. Not only did Hanks win his first Oscar for the role, but he shed several pounds for it as well. It was Hanks’ first purely dramatic role.

Hanks had been around for several years before Big came out in 1988, but it was really this movie about a kid who wishes he was older that told movie lovers that he was here to stay. After all several celebrities get stuck in a rut playing the same type of character over and over again, but Hanks showed he could play different comedic styles.

Admit it, you can hear Tom Hanks’ voice when you read the line “there’s no crying in baseball”. In A League Of Their Own Hanks plays the manager of an all female baseball team during WW2, and while the role might not be his most likable of characters, it is one of his most memorable.

When Forrest Gump won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1993 a lot of people were surprised. After all Pulp Fiction seemed to be the front-runner. Still, there is something about the lovable half-wit that makes the movie fun to watch, even today. Hanks won his second best actor Oscar for the role, which came just a year after his first.

You can’t make a list of Tom Hanks’ best roles, without including at least one in which his co-star was Meg Ryan. Sleepless in Seattle was the second, and the best of their films together, but we wouldn’t be surprised if a fourth was in the works in the future. It’s a love story about a man who loses his wife, only to find that there just might be someone else out there for him.
