Now Playing: Movies Opening On February 17th, 2012
If you are looking for something to do this long weekend there are a few new choices out there. There’s a sequel to a comic book movie, an action comedy, and an animated family flick. It’s hard to say if any of them will come out on top, or if the Vow will continue to reign supreme.
It’s kind of surprising that the 2007 movie Ghost Rider got a sequel, but nevertheless Spirit of Vengeance opens this weekend. Nicolas Cage returns, but no one else from the original is back. This time around Johnny Blaze is hiding out in Eastern Europe, and finds himself called upon to stop the devil. The plot sort of begs the question, why doesn’t Johnny know that he can’t really hide from his responsibility? The movie will more than likely be extremely cheesy, but the first one actually was kind of fun.
Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy, and Chris Pine star in This Means War, a movie about two CIA operatives waging war against one another over a woman. Director McG has seen a fair bit of success through his movies (Charlie’s Angels, Terminator Salvation) and it will be interesting to see how he plays this one. If done right it could be a lot of fun. If done poorly you could leave the theater shaking your head.
The Secret World of Arrietty has been out for a couple of years overseas in Japan, but it’s just now getting the North American treatment. Dubbed in English, this story about a family of four inch people being discovered by the family in whose house they live could be a huge hit. Especially with it coming on the long weekend.
