2012’s Most Anticipated Movies

If all goes the way it looks like it might, 2012 could be a banner year for Hollywood.  After all, there are many highly anticipated movies this year, some of which have a chance at breaking box office records.  Two franchises are coming to a close, a new one is beginning, and a few are returning after a hiatus.  When the smoke clears and the dust settles, it’ll be interesting to see which ones come out on top.

The Dark Knight Rises is the final chapter in the Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.  Christian Bale dons the cape and cowl one last time, and there rumors are swirling that the director is planning on killing the character off during the flick.  Whether or not that rumor is true is unknown, but the trailers look intense and it is probably the most anticipated of all the movies in this list.  Well except maybe….

The Hobbit.  When Peter Jackson signed on to direct the Hobbit movie, many Lord of the Rings fans let out a collective cheer.   After all, who better to direct than the man that brought Middle Earth to life in the first place.  It’s been 9 years since the last movie came out, and it will be interesting to see if fans love this one as much as the previous trilogy.  This is only the first part of the story though, so watch for the second part to be on next years list if this one is good.

Marvel Comics has been planting the seeds for The Avengers movie ever since Iron Man came out in 2008, and it’shard to believe that this summer it will finally happen.  Fan boy idol Joss Whedon directs, and it should be interesting to see if he’s able to tell a great story, or get lost in a mess of characters.      It could go either way.

Daniel Craig returns for a third trip as James Bond in Skyfall.  Casino Royale was great, Quantum of Solace was so-so, but hopes are high for Skyfall to get the franchise back on track after a lot of financial difficulties.  With a supporting cast that includes Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem, and a director of Sam Mendes’ caliber it will be hard to fail.

This Spring’s hottest ticket has to be The Hunger Games.  Even though it’s based on the best selling young adult series, it is sure to attract a lot of attention from adults as well.  If it does well, expect to see the next movie get released in either the hot summer or November time slots, and expect to see the final novel get split into two movies.  A trend that another popular series continued.

And that series is Twilight.  Breaking Dawn Part 2 comes out next November, and if you are a fan of the series you are probably anticipating this movie.  If you’re not a fan you are probably anticipating it as well because it’ll be the last time you have to hear about them.

Ridley Scott returns to the world of Alien in Prometheus.  It’ll be interesting to see how this movie is received, and whether or not Mr. Scott still has what it takes to direct science fiction.  The first teaser looks incredible however, and with a cast like Charlize Theron and Noomi Rapace it’s going to be hard to mess it up.

This year also sees Spider-man return to the big screen in The Amazing Spider-Man.  Don’t expect a continuation from the earlier movies however as it was decided to reboot the franchise.  With a new cast and a new director the movie could very well sneak into the top movies of the year.  Especially since it’s been promised to deliver a grittier and darker spider-man.

And the final entry on this list is the Brad Pitt movie World War Z.  The zombie apocalypse has happened, and Pitt’s character travels the world to hear the stories of the survivors.  The Max Brooks book was nothing short of incredible, but how it will translate onto the screen has yet to be seen.  Watch for this one in the later half of the year.
