While most of us may rush to the salon for a hair colour makeover, an unexpected new fad has beauty mavens transforming their tresses at home with a party essential. Although tissue paper may be used to wrap gifts, it has now found another purpose as an at-home hair colour tool!

On Instagram, daring beauty gurus are discovering that crepe paper is helpful for far more than just decorating for a surprise celebration. In fact, crepe paper is being utilized to temporarily dye hair in an array of crazy rainbow hues.

According to Marie Claire, the colour will last for approximately a week, depending on one’s hair type, length and texture. To achieve the look, experimental beauty lovers are cutting sections of the multicoloured paper into thin strips and mixing them with warm, salted water.

Next, the mixture is applied to the hair and allowed to soak for about 15 minutes. The crepe paper strips can also be used to create an ombre effect, bold streaks or striking colourful ends.

From violet to dark blue, crepe paper strands are quickly making a grand entrance on social media. While we would recommend consulting with a professional hair colourist before embracing the season’s rainbow-hued trend, it seems that some would rather save than splurge! Here’s a closer look at the latest temporary hair fix to sweep Instagram this summer.
