Krista Kim’s “Digital Consciousness” art exhibit hits Toronto just in time for Nuit Blanche, and is set to take place at Toronto’s Only One Gallery from September 30 to October 1. Kim is a Canadian-born artist and also a member of the “techism” movement, which aims to reflect today’s digital age through the merge of modern innovation and art. The name of her collection, “digital consciousness”, embraces technology as a medium that unites and intensifies an individual’s perceptions. Kim’s artwork is unique and relevant, attempting to challenge the social dynamics of digital technology through abstract expressionism.
Expanding the parameters of art, this collection strives to unveil the beauty behind our technologies, which are often accused of being “digital distractions.” Kim aesthetically responds to our digitally conditioned society, using the LED lights that are frequently beaming from our smartphones and laptops as her prime source of inspiration. She refers to her art as “algorithmic abstraction”, and presents software-manipulated colour gradients to express the physiological effects of the light shining from our devices. The confluence of art and technology offers a distinctive perspective on the tensions existing in our cyber-society. Overall, the exhibition claims to embody our digital era, by exploring the effects of modern innovation and adaption.
