Next year’s Best Picture winner is going to be
a tough one to call, especially with all the great lms that have come out already this year. Still, TIFF is well known for premiering many of the last two decades’ worth of Best Picture winners and nominees, and this year will be no different. One lm you need
to pay attention to is Stronger, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany. The Academy loves strong, emotional true stories, and this one tells the story of a Boston Marathon bombing survivor. Of course if
you want to talk about Academy favourites,
you really can’t ignore George Clooney. The actor/director is bringing his latest lm Suburbicon to TIFF, and with a cast that includes Matt Damon and Julianne Moore, you just know it will be a must-see lm. It’s the story
battle oF the sexes
of a home invasion that rattles a small town.
best actress
You just know Jennifer Lawrence is looking for another Oscar. With
four nominations in the books, and one win,
the young actress knows how to pick a good role. With 2016’s failures behind her (she was
in two critical pans, X-Men: Apocalypse and Passengers), there is no better way to clean the slate than to win another statue. Of course,
she will be facing stiff competition from this year’s winner Emma
Stone, who is starring in the lm Battle of the Sexes, where she plays 1970s tennis prodigy Billie Jean King.
best actor
With an Oscar nomination already under his belt for playing the real life character of John du Pont in 2014’s Foxcatcher, expect to see Steve Carell’s name in circulation again this year for playing another real person in Battle
of the Sexes. He plays the chauvinistic Bobby Riggs, who is willing to do anything to make a quick buck. With Emma
Stone receiving
so much attention opposite him, they could become
the rst co-stars
to take home
the top acting trophies since Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt for 1997’s As Good as It Gets. With
six of the last ten Oscars having coming from actors playing real life characters, the odds are de nitely in his favour. Still, Matt Damon has three Oscar nominations for acting under his belt, and zero statues to show for it. In Downsizing, he plays an occupational therapist who undergoes a procedure to shrink himself so that he and his wife can have a better life. Damon is so well liked in Hollywood that you just know his award time is coming, and this lm just might be the one to earn it for him.
