Zoe and I host a HUGE designer sample sale called Super Saturday in Los Angeles to raise proceeds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF). It’s something I’m really pas- sionate about and look forward to every year. It’s always a great turnout!
RS: Where do you nd some of your crea- tive inspiration for your fashion, lifestyle and beauty blog?
MS: I’m constantly doing research and learn- ing new things. I also try to nd inspiration
in my daily life. I’ve always been obsessed with beauty and fashion, since I come from that world, but through my blog I’m discover- ing new interests, too. For example, I never thought I’d enjoy cooking but I do! It’s so
fun to try out new healthy recipes that I get to share with everyone.
RS: Tell us more about your modelling days. You walked the Victoria’s Secret run- way in 2001, starred as a CoverGirl spokes- model and covered Sports Illustrated! How was your overall experience as a model?
MS: The modelling business can be brutal and I can honestly say I couldn’t have done
it without the support of my family, friends and agents. (I love you Leigh Crystal!) In the beginning, I almost gave up. But I believed in myself and kept moving. I studied and strate- gized. I didn’t let myself fall into the trap of comparison, as hard as that sometimes was. I won’t lie—it was dif cult at times. But look- ing back I don’t regret a thing. It all brought me to where I am today and I’m grateful for that.
RS: What are your best/worst/funniest memories from modelling?
MS: My worst memory was from the very beginning. When I got signed with Next, they sent me to Germany for six months to build my portfolio. When I arrived, the agency looked me up and down and said, “Absolutely not. You are too fat.” I’m not joking. He said that word for word. They almost sent me home and I would have had to pay back the money it took to y me there. I was devastat- ed but realized there was no way I was giving up. So I begged them to give me a chance and made the decision I was going to work my butt off to succeed.
RS: What are some of the best lessons you learned while working in the fashion industry?
MS: Oh, where do I start? That’s where I learned everything I know. As a model, you quickly learn that when it comes to clothes, it’s all about t. Always buy a size up, espe- cially if it’s cheap. When there is a little more play in the fabric, the piece will almost al- ways present better. Also, never underestimate the power of a tailor. Tailoring can be as basic as adding snaps to a button down so it doesn’t gap. It’s those slight adjustments that can look more attering.
“Motherhood has changed me in so many ways. it’s taught me to be sel ess and to always count my blessings.”
RS: What in uenced you to later switch your focus to acting?
MS: Modelling isn’t like it used to be. Now, models are everywhere. But, back then, TV was one of the best ways to get more recogni- tion. I started out hosting on MTV’s House
of Style, which led to Mission Makeover. From there, I started hosting events and other national spots. It was a bit scary at rst since
I had to learn so much, but it became some- thing I fell in love with. From there, I decided to pack up my bags and move to L.A. to start acting classes. With lots of hard work behind the scenes, I managed to land an audition with Las Vegas and never looked back.
RS: Do you have any favourite celebrity role models?
MS: I would de nitely have to say Jennifer Garner. I’d even go as far as to say she’s my ultimate “mom crush.” She’s great at balanc-
ing motherhood and her career and is very hands on. I also respect how much she gives back. She’s a great person and mom!
RS: Which designers are personal favour- ites of yours?
MS: I’ll always love the classics. Isabel Marant and Lanvin, to name a few. But I also love designers such as A.L.C. and Ulla John- son, which are a little more affordable. Oh, and never underestimate Zara! It’s amazing.
RS: What are your favourite style essen- tials for Spring 2017?
MS: Well, my real spring essential is to lose this baby weight. But in all seriousness, I’m really into the whole athleisure trend this season. As someone who lived and died for a good pair of heels, I cannot believe I’m say- ing that. It’s so cute! I’m loving that sporty look: bomber jackets, cute sneakers, all of it.
RS: How do you like to unwind and relax in your free time?
MS: Honestly, I try to sleep if I get the chance. I always joke that my best nap is the ve-hour ight from LAX to JFK. I can sleep anywhere. I also love to read and spend all day in my pajamas with my family on the weekend. Oh, and a spa day is always nice too!
RS: While you’re based in Los Angeles, you are also in New York City often. What do you enjoy the most about being in NYC?
MS: There’s just no place like NYC. I try to get back as often as possible. Many of my girlfriends still live there. I just love the hustle and bustle of the city. But I also love my
life here in Los Angeles. I feel lucky to have spent all those years as a single girl in NYC. I wouldn’t trade it for the world!
RS: Do you have any dream travel destina- tions?
MS: I’ve always wanted to go to Croatia. Scott and I may take a little post-babymoon and visit Dubrovnik this summer since we’ve both never been. I also want to go back to India at some point. I went 15 years ago and it was the best trip of my life!
