THE HAPPY PRINCE
Oscar Wilde is
a beloved Irish playwright and poet, and writer of some of the most cherished stories of the day. His life was very tragic, however, including a turn in prison for his sexuality. This film tells the story of the last days of his life, after
he has been freed from prison and is living destitute.
BEAUTIFUL BOY
If you are trying to
get a jump on seeing the Oscar contenders early, you might
want to check this one out. Both of the stars, Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet, should get acting nods for this story about a family struggling with addiction over the course of many years.
CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?
Melissa McCarthy
may not be the first name that comes to mind when you think Oscar contender, but early word is that she should be up for Best Actress next year for this role. In it she plays Lee Israel, the celebrity biographer who turned to forging letters by deceased writers and actors after her writing career fell apart.
  A STAR IS BORN
THE BRADLEY COOPER AND LADY GAGA FILM IS TURNING HEADS BEFORE AWARDS SEASON HEATS UP.
When awards season rolls around next year, one film you are sure to hear about time and time again is A Star Is Born. The film stars Bradley Cooper as a musician whose career is spiraling downwards thanks to alcohol and hearing problems, who decides to help a young singer (played by Lady Gaga) start her own career. They fall in love, despite his problems, but when her career starts to eclipse his own, jealousy rears its ugly head and his problems start to intensify.
While A Star Is Born is not a new idea (it has been made three times before, in 1937, 1954 and 1976), this version is unique and different than the films that have come before it. This version had
a rocky road being made though, with several different people attached to star in, and direct the film, before Bradley Cooper came on board and decided to do both. The dramatic movie
touched hearts and earned rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival, before doing more of the same at the Toronto International Film Festival. And it’s easy to see why.
Cooper manages to
play a character unlike any he’s ever played before.
His character is tragic, yet sympathetic, and when you look at him on the screen you see the character Cooper is playing, instead of Cooper playing a character. The chemistry he has with co-star Lady Gaga is believable as well, and without it people wouldn’t be talking about the movie as much as they are. It’s perfectly conceivable that both stars will receive plenty of nominations and several wins during awards season.
For his directorial debut, Cooper has shown that he knows what he’s doing when it comes to making a film
and when it is released on October 5 audiences are sure to show their support.
