The Oscar’s are just as much about the fashion as they are the films. Designers fight to get their most luxurious gowns on the hottest celebrities on the red carpet. The Academy knows that. Today they revealed the “Oscar Designer Challenge 2010” where you can vote on one of the gowns.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose nine emerging designers to create gowns for the annual contest. BBC News reports the winning designer will be announced live during the Oscar pre-show. The model delivering the Oscar statues on stage during the award ceremony will wear their dress.
The nominated designers are all new designers who will surely make their mark if they win. The designers are: Ari Sheuhmelian, Elda de la Rosa, Fernanda Carneiro, Ivy Higa, Kelsey Zimba, Oday Shakar, Oliver Tolentino, Phong Hong and Rania Salibi. The red carpet gowns include a number of popular trends we have been seeing this year. There is a sparkling silver gown, a few nudes, many asymmetric, one shoulder and strapless tops.

Celebrities and fashion designers came together last night to finish the first day of New York Fashion Week with a bang. The Heart Truth Red Dress fashion show is a star-studded event where celebrities model red dresses made by top fashion designers to raise awareness of women’s heart disease.
Celebrities involved in the show included Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian, Joan Collins, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and Kimora Lee Simmons. Designers who created red dresses for the fashion show were John Galliano, Oscar De La Renta, Marchesa and Jenny Packham.
All of the dresses will be auctioned off to raise money for research.
The fashion show is meant to be a fun event with the celebrities mixing it up on the catwalk, smiling and waving for the cameras. Actress Felicity Huffman even ran back to kiss her husband.

The Korean version of the W Magazine featuring Demi Moore’s infamous photo hit newsstands this week. Photographer Anthony Citrano is taking notice of the differences.
In November, Anthony Citrano offered $5,000 to charity if Demi Moore could prove that the W Magazine cover wasn’t touched up. In response, Demi Moore’s lawyers sent a letter to the photographer demanding a retraction. The Sun reports that the letter said: As you are undoubtedly well aware, my client’s appearance is of great importance to her career and livelihood, and false claims or insinuations that she secretly uses extraordinarily artificial means to alter her appearance are extremely damaging. He has refused to apologize for his statements via his blog. Other blogs including Boing Boing and Jezebel have been sent letters to remove their stories as well.
Anthony Citrano saw the Korean W Magazine and has posted it on his blog for all to see with a lengthy statement. He says: The January 2010 issue of W Korea just hit the newsstands (with the ironic subtitle “Women in Full”). Unsurprisingly, they decided to use the excellent Mert & Marcus shot of Demi Moore. But very surprisingly, they installed a new hip on Demi. So: even W’s sister publication thought the image looked weird enough to fix.
He goes on to question the new image and the letter he received and many bloggers seem to agree with his sentiments.
He finishes his blog saying: Anyway, to my eyes, the W Korea image looks great – it’s a beautiful cover, and anatomically correct! If I’d seen this image in W’s December advance, I never would have said a thing – except, perhaps, “nice work!”
So far Demi Moore and her lawyer have not yet responded.
The fashion world has already called the Lindsay Lohan line for the fashion house Ungaro a disaster and now the company’s founder is doing the same. The original designer Emanuel Ungaro has told the press just how disappointed he is.
The Independent reports that Emanuel Ungaro said “Lindsay Lohan’s collaboration was a disaster” during a press conference on Monday. He added, “I am furious but I can’t do anything about it.”
Ungaro’s CEO already admitted that they hired Lindsay Lohan on as the artistic advisor as a publicity stunt, which completely backfired on them when the collection got horrible reviews.
Emanuel Ungaro left the house in 2004, but he still has strong feelings toward the company that bears his name. He told reporters that Ungaro “is in the process of losing its soul… That happens to a lot of designers. We were the creators and patrons, responsible for the creation and destiny of our houses. But when we gave up our houses, we gave up our souls.”
We already told you that the Kardashian’s will be creating a line for Bebe, and now Nicole Richie is joining the party. Nicole Richie will be designing an exclusive House of Harlow 1960 jewelry line for Bebe. Nicole Richie is quickly becoming one of the busiest girls around with all of her fashion lines and her new baby.
Alicia Keys is jumping on the jewelry collection trend as well. The singer will be unveiling her new jewelry line in New York on November 23rd. It is co-designed with Gisele Theriault of The Barber’s Daughter accessory line.
A few men will be joining the ranks of celebrity fashion designer as well. LA Laker Lamar Odom, who is better known as the man who had a shotgun wedding with Khloe Kardashian, launched his fashion line Rich Soil which is urban wear for men, women and babies. And southern rockers King of Leon are joining up with Surface to Air to create their own exclusive line. Their southern style isn’t really fashion forward, so it will be interesting to see what they can come up with.
Speaking of men as fashion designers. It looks like Justin Timberlake is taking his William Rast brand to the next level. The contemporary sportswear brand, cofounded by Timberlake and his friend Trace Ayala, unveiled its fusion of a Hollywood lifestyle with Tennessee roots in three California stores that opened Sunday, heralding the launch of 40 to 50 stores by 2012. Stores in Chicago, New York, San Diego, Las Vegas, Miami and Scottsdale, Ariz., are to make their debuts next year. The company also targeted Germany, the U.K. and Japan for units. Coinciding with the retail rollout will be next fall’s introduction of shoes to complement the trendy jeans, weathered leather jackets and plaid shirts produced by the four-year-old brand

The Kardashian sisters are teaming up with BeBe to create their own clothing line. Kim, Khloe and Kourtney do have great style so it was only a matter of time. Kim says on her blog: This is honestly a dream come true! We have always loved fashion and have wanted to design for such a long time and now we finally are! Kanye West is facing the music. His clothing line, Pastelle, has been shut down before it even started. No reasons have been given as to why the clothes will never be sold. Erm, we can take a good guess that it has something to do with his boorish behaviour during the VMA’s. This work has been in plans for three years but alas like the cancelled concert tour with lady GAGA, it has fallen apart.
Cute little Disney star Selena Gomez is now a “fashion designer”. The 17 year old teamed up with Tony Melillo, former Generra designer to create Dream Out Loud by Serena Gomez. She calls the line pretty, feminine and bohemian. They are currently looking for an exclusive partner to sell the clothes. Can’t wait for The Gosselin kids to start theirs…or maybe the “8 can wait” another 15 years!
The hottest designs in Jewelry right now are big, bold and shiny statement pieces.
They come in the form of large draped necklaces in silver, gold, crystal, rope chains and bib style jewels.
