FASHION SHOWS: Mark Fast Uses Curvy Models Again At London Fashion Week

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

59676678Last season Canadian fashion designer Mark Fast made fashion headlines by using plus-size models in his revealing Spring/Summer 2010 runway show. Yesterday at London Fashion Week, the designer stayed true to his vision and used curvy models in his knitwear show again.

While other runways shows featured tradition size zero models, ABC News reports Mark Fast was adamant about making sure his clothes were modeled on real looking women. He has stood by his vision of celebrating all women through fashion regardless of size.

Mark Fast is getting good reviews for his ideas. The fashion critic from the Telegraph said, “I really enjoyed the show because I think Mark has really developed and evolved as a designer… He’s doing things that ordinary people could wear, as the size 16 models demonstrated.”

Mark Fast’s Fall/Winter 2010 collection is much less revealing than his previous show. This season he added more to his collection than just his trademark knitting. The Mark Fast Fall/Winter 2010 fashion show featured tight fitting and draped dresses with detailing at the neckline, light skirts and cropped capes. The colours spanned from neutrals of black and brown to vibrant jewel tones of red and orange.

Model Coco Rocha Speaks Out Against Fashion Industry Model Size Requirements

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

coco-rochaThis week Coco Rocha woke up to see the New York Daily News asking the city if she is too fat to be a runway model. After an interview with the New York Times, the Canadian model has been making headlines on the issue.

At size four, Coco Rocha has modeled for Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier and Yves Saint Laurent. She isn’t letting the fashion industry determine her size any longer. In fact she has just released a statement on her blog. In the well written blog post, she points out that she’s busier than ever as a model, but that the issue of models weight is and will always be a concern to her. She said:

“Surely we all see how morally wrong it is for an adult to convince an already thin 15 year old that she is actually too fat. It is unforgivable that an adult should demand that the girl unnaturally lose the weight vital to keep her body functioning properly. How can any person justify an aesthetic that reduces a woman or child to an emaciated skeleton? Is it art? Surely fashions aesthetic should enhance and beautify the human form, not destroy it.”

On the topic of models speaking out ,Coco Rocha also said:

In the past models have spoken out on this issue, only to be accused of saying something because their careers were on the brink of extinction. This is not so in my case. I actually first spoke out about this two years ago at the peak of what a model would consider the ideal career and there was a reaction – those who were the worst offenders suddenly asked me to work for them! This was a public relations ploy and I wasn’t prepared to fall for that. I said “No, lets go a few seasons, lets see if you change, then I will work with you”. They didn’t change. I haven’t worked for them.

Of my generation of models I’m exactly where I need to be in my career and I’m grateful to use my position to actively speak out against this with the support of the CFDA. My sincere hope is that through our efforts young models will one day be spared the humiliation, the risky weight loss, the depression that comes along with anorexia and the misery of abandonment by an industry ashamed to see them turn into actual women.”

The CFDA has set codes in place for their members and I’d love to see the entire industry follow. Society legislates a lot of things – no steroid use in baseball is one example – its only reasonable that there be rules of conduct to keep the fashion industry healthy.”

ZERO sample size is the standard for runway and photo shoots. The Council Of American Fashion Designers held a conference last week to discuss whether they should move it up to a size four. We applaud Coco Rocha’s strong and brave stand on the issue of weight in the modelling industry.

This is only the latest in a long debate over weight issues in the fashion industry. Last year, Ralph Lauren got caught over photoshopping a model and Demi Moore appeared on the cover of W Magazine apparently photoshopped. Karl Lagerfeld added to the debate sayingno one wants to see round women.”  Model Lara Stone was also criticized for her size four weight. Changes are coming as seen in magazines refusing to cast anorexic models and designers slowly adopting fuller models, but is it coming too slowly?

MARK FAST: FASHION DESIGNER PROFILE

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

mark fast head shot.jpgGrowing up in Winnipeg, Canada, Mark Fast probably never realized that he would spark controversy across the fashion world before his 30th birthday. That’s just what this Canadian born fashion designer did at London Fashion Week, when he put plus-sized models in his sexy, revealing runway show. This fashion show which made headlines all over the world, helped to not only put Mark Fast on the international up and coming fashion designer fast track, it is also helping to usher in a sea of change surrounding the ongoing controversy about the perception of beauty and size in the fashion industry.

Mark Fast grew up in the peaceful prairies, but moved to London to study at Central Saint Matrins completing his MA in 2008. To create his startling knitwear Fast uses a knitting machine and works onto the body giving it that shape hugging form. His yarn and the curves of the body inspire him as he forms each piece.

For his most recent collection Mark Fast collaborated with Swarovski for materials and Christian Louboutin for shoes. He found inspiration in silent films and strong female characters such as Erin Brockovich. Mark Fast said that: The S/S 10 catwalk show will focus on women’s courage in modern society as a medium.

The fashion designer also gave courage to the plus-sized models he invited to join him on the runway scoring him points with regular buyers, but none was shown in the fashion world when his freelance stylist and casting director quit, allegedly because the models weren’t ready for the runway as opposed to their size. Just recently in an indepth article on the changing perception of beauty and size, The Guardian in London gave Mark Fast a great deal of credit in helping to usher in the changes to the zero size models:

“The pictures of Morley in Mark Fast’s sexy cobweb dresses – with Gwyneth Harrison and Laura Catterall – made front-page news around the world. “I was shocked by the coverage. I had no idea it would be such a big deal. I was just doing my job.”

But Morley’s job description is changing. She has become part of a sea change that has swept across the fashion industry in the past month. Suddenly women who don’t look emaciated – or even svelte – are part of fashion’s story. For anyone sick of seeing dangerously underweight adolescents dominate the style landscape (and who isn’t?), this was what they call in the trade “a moment”. For some of us, it feels like a cultural turning point, long overdue.”………….

Mark Fast was able to include girls with different figures because he shows knitwear: it’s stretchy. He is keen to play down the politics of his move, not wanting to irritate other designers. “I wasn’t trying to make a huge statement,” he says, “Like, ‘Look, you’re not doing it right.’ I just thought it was time: I see so many beautiful women out there and I just want to put them on the catwalk. I think attitudes are changing. There is something in the air. Some people are picking up on it. Others… not so quickly.”

Fast has shown that any woman can own a Mark Fast knit and incorporate it into her wardrobe widening his appeal.

“My knits respond differently to different bodies,” he said. “Some looks just work better on curves in the same way that certain tailoring works better on different body types.” (Toronto Star)

Mark Fast says that in his fashion he wants to celebrate all women. His intricate, sexy clothing proves that he is honouring a women’s body and her curves regardless of her size. His S/S 2010 collection features skirts and dresses with carefully placed fabric to cover the more private areas in mostly muted tones of tan, black and grey. The fringed tops and skirts sway over the models form. Very few pieces leave much to the imagination.

His Body Con collection of skintight, hole-filled knit dresses showed a daring designer style — especially when worn by models that can fill out an outfit. There is no doubt that Mr. Fast’s knits left little to the imagination, other than to marvel at the way the designer created a lush feminine feel with so little fabric. (New York Times)

FASHION DESIGNER: Beckerman Profile

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

beckerman diner dress.JPGBetween all of the 12-inch heels and model controversy we sometimes forget that fashion is supposed to be fun. Then along comes a ray of fashion sunshine like Beckerman and you remember why you like dressing up in frills and lace in the first place.

The Canadian fashion design team is made up of twin sisters Caillianne and Samantha Beckerman, along with younger sister Chloe. They spent their childhood together in Toronto developing a passion for creating fashion, with each other.

As soon as they could, all three of them swept off to the New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, to dive head first into the world of fashion design. Each sister studied a different area playing off of their strengths. The line launched as the girls’ thesis to finishing FIT and in a twist of luck, fate and success the entire line was bought by a Tokyo department store. The newly minted fashion designers were thrown into the spotlight, eager to start their own line. Who better to have at your side as you start a risky career in the fashion world than your sisters?

The sisters have the knack of creating playful, rock’n'roll tinged clothes for their affluent, twenty-something clientele. (dazed digital)

Beckerman creates their own textiles each season to fulfill their reputation as bringing dreams and fairy tales to life in their clothes. A feat that most fashion design houses do not take on. But it helps to fulfill their vision, which is pretty clear. Only the most bold, fun and young at heart will dare step into a Beckerman’s dress. With their young girly aesthetic and years ahead of them to learn and grow, this is a line that promises something playful for a long time.

The message, wrapped in a big satin bow, is, yes, this cupcake has a lot of frosting. It’s messy and illogical. But eat the damn thing, enjoy it and don’t worry so much. (Toronto Life
