CANADA STYLE: ELLE Canada Presents Toronto Fashion Incubator Gala

Monday, April 26th, 2010

By : Editor

anne-marie-mediwake-anchor-cbc-news-presenterOn Saturday evening, at the Elle Canada sponsored Gala event, five brand new Canadian fashion design finalists presented their collections for the Toronto Fashion Incubator New Label Fashion Design competition. Effervescent Anne Marie Mediwake, anchor of CBC News Now, introduced the participating designers and judges.

Toronto Fashion Incubator is a non-profit organization that helps budding fashion designers develop their creative and business capacities. The innovative concept was the world’s first fashion incubator and in the last 23 years has fostered Canada’s most celebrated fashion designers including: Joeffer Caoc, David Dixon, Todd Lynn and Arthur Medonca.

At the ELLE Canada Gala, the five talented designers and competition finalists were: Anastasia Lomonova, Birds of North America (Hayley Gibson), House Of Groves (Jennifer Waters), Diepo (Justine Diener/Kristin Poon) and Paris Li. The fashion industry judges including fashion designer David Dixon and Noreen Flanagan of ELLE Canada,Derick Chetty of the Toronto Star,  Adriana Gut of Mattel Canada, Jason Morikawa of Holt Renfrew, and celebrity fashion stylist Peter Papapetrou. were judging live at the show and chose Anastasia Lomonova as the winner. She won a grand prize package of over $35,000.00

Here is a recap of the highlights of the fashion collections on the runway:

Anastasia’s designs were comprised of delicate, intricately pleated and draped mini dresses over mesh bodysuits and leggings. There was something of  ”kiss of the spiderwoman” about the collection of gauze chiffon tunic dresses. The all black collection also included sequin and lace embellishments.

house-of-groves-victorian-22I loved Jennifer Waters’ House Of Groves fashion collection. Particular favorites were the Victorian look bolero and wool tail jackets with flared skirts. The “lady of the manor” feel to those pieces was further accentuated by top hats as accessories and riding crops.

Diepo (Justine Diener/Kristin Poon), aptly named their fashion collection ‘inside/outside’. Difficult to distinguish at first if this was a lingerie or outerwear collection, the mostly sheer garments which looked like underwear or sexy shapewear were shown with thigh high pantyhose and garters.

Birds of North America (Hayley Gibson), showed a muted colour spectrum in a collection of  slim dresses with cap sleeves and gathered skirts. We really liked the leggings of rouched chiffon worn with the dresses. As well, the “little black dress” in a special Barbie presentation was a masterpiece of construction and proportion.

Paris Li, was another new Canadian fashion designer whose collection I enjoyed. Right on fashion cue with the use of fur or faux fur, sharp shoulders and shoulder detail, sharp jackets, slim skirts and vests. The charcoal mink short sleeved dress was outstanding. As well, kudos to Aldo for gorgeous embellished leather booties worn with the collection.

CANADA STYLE: First Canadian Eco-Fashion Awards Announced

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

preloved-toronto-fashion-week-copyJust in time for Earth Day on Thursday, the first ever Canadian Eco-Fashion Awards have been announced. The eco-fashion awards will celebrate designers who are using organic and sustainable products to create fashionable collections.

The nominees for the first Canadian Eco-Fashion Awards are Thieves, Elladora, Elroy, deux fm, Preloved, Nicole Bridger, Nixxi, Paper People Clothing, flora&fauna, Lav & Kush, Laura Chenoweth, Salts Organic Clothing, Revolve Clothing Co. and We3 (twigg&hottie). The nominees will be judged on their designs, materials, and production methods to find the greenest and most fashionable designs in Canada. Any extra green activities like informing consumers on environmental issues and using green energy will also be taken into consideration.

The awards were the idea of Fashion Takes Action (FTA). FTA is a Canadian organization that supports sustainable fashion around the world.

The winner will get a national PR campaign, a spot at Nolcha Fashion Week’s Ethical Fashion Preview in New York City, $1000 in eco-friendly fabric, and a look book photo shoot among other things.

These awards will hopefully promote the idea of going greener to other designers across the country. FTA wants people to see that eco-friendly clothes are readily available and fashionable. The mindset that eco-fashions are just drab sacks is long gone. Come back to Real Style Network tomorrow when we will be featuring some of our favourite eco-friendly and organic fashions in honour of Earth Day.

The top three finalists will be announced on Earth Day. The winner of the Canadian Eco-Fashion Awards will be announced at the end of the month.

CANADA STYLE: Ezra Constantine Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Show Review

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

ezra-constantine-menswear

Yesterday Real Style Network told you about the beautiful Greta Constantine Fall/Winter 2010 collection shown this past weekend. Accompanying the womenswear line was Ezra Constantine, Stephen Wong and Kirk Pickersgill’s menswear collection.

The Ezra Constantine fall/winter collection was very post-apocalyptic looking. The male models came down the catwalk looking battered, similar to a look another home grown talent, Dsquared, showed in their recent collection. The whole line channeled a military theme with army helmets, cargo pants, vests and military jackets in blacks and brown. The gray men’s jackets were well tailored and made for stand out pieces in the Ezra Constantine collection.

This was an edgy, urban line that had a number of very wearable pieces.

CANADA STYLE: Greta Constantine’s Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Show Review

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

greta-constantine-fall-winter-2010-collection-copy

Fashion designers Greta Constantine showed their fall/winter 2010 women and menswear collection this past weekend at a pre-Toronto Fashion Week show. Designers, Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong from Greta Constantine never fail to wow at their runway shows and this was no exception. The fashion crowd in attendance loved the show!

The Greta Constantine womenswear collection opened with beautifully draped gowns in dark tones. As we have seen from many other designers this season, black and grey dominated the colours of these Greta Constantine dresses. The garments were accessorized with bracelets, bib necklaces and embellishments of smashed mirror pieces. A gorgeous purple gown with a matching cape stood out amongst the dark pieces.

Next up was a set of sparkling dresses. These gowns were black with sparkling blue and gold sequins. Oversized leather belts adorned the looks.

The womenswear line finished with an urban segment from the Greta Constantine collection. Models walked in tight leather and spandex pants. Tops were  made of black fur in coyote, beaver and goat. There was a large selection of luxurious looking  fur tanks, tunics and wraps.

The Greta Constatine show included look for everyone. Some say that Stephen Wong and Kirk Pickersgill have finally started showing off the extent of their designing talent.

CANADA STYLE NEWS: Canadian Fashion Designers Present: Dare To Wear Love-Fashion Show

Monday, October 26th, 2009

By Editor:

So You Think You Can Dance Canada judge’s Jean Marc Genereux legs really do feel like they are made of steel. How do we know? We felt them. Why? Cause his co- judge Tre Armstrong told us to.. Where? In the line waiting to see The Dare To Wear Love fashion show benefitting the Stephen Lewis foundation.

The star studded Canadian fashion extravaganza was easily one of the best fashion shows at LG Fashion Week in Toronto, Canada. The event which premiered as the closing gala of LG Fashion Week, showcased some of the most gorgeous designs of the week and the fashion show was a blast. The packed to capacity and beyond crowd of over 1200 attendees, Dare To Wear Love fashion show was staged to benefit the Stephen Lewis Foundation which is raising funds to support Africa’s Aids orphans and the grandmothers who take care of them. (The foundation issues tax receipts for all donations over $20.00, please donate online here.)

Masterminded by the talented and established Canadian design team behind Hoax Couture, Jim Searle and Chris Tyrell and supported by the FDCC , the fashion show featured some of Canada’s most established and well known fashion designers. Such as: Wayne Clark, Linda Lundstrom, Evan Biddell, Lida Baday, Hoax Couture, Greta Constantine, Brian Bailey, David Dixon, Pat Macdonagh just to name a few.

The designers were given 6 yards each of African fabric to create their gowns. All of the work, time and materials was donated for the event which also included the models time. While some were established models, others and frankly the ones who received the most applause, were media and public eye personalities which included: MPP Olivia Chow, Traci Melchor from eTalk, MTV host Jessi Cruckshank ( who hillariously vamped it up on the runway) and singer Jully Black who not only jumped in the lap of Steve Sabados, but also stopped to do a booty shake to the delight of the crowd.

Take a look at some of the spectacular designs:

Our very own gossip man, Shinan Govani from National Post was there. GRETA CONSTANTINE CANADIAN FASHION DESIGNER SPRING 2010 FASHION SHOW

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Greta Constantine fashion line is the creation of one of CanadaStyle blog’s favorite Canadian design teams. The  fashion designers behind the label consist of Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong. This dynamic duo have made a name for themselves in Canada and Internationally with their gorgeous draped and flowing goddess gowns and sharp architectural shapes. Greta Constantine’s designs are often compared to the top fashion brands in the world and their spring 2010 women’s collection had the feel of both Christian Dior  collections with the gowns and Lanvin for the fitted draped dresses and ruffles, with a bit of Alexander McQueen with multitonal colors.

Judging by the crowd turnout and reactions,at their fashion show held in a large, two storied Audi dealership, was a success. Ben Mulroney host of Etalk, Jeanne Beker host of Fashion Television and Barbara Atkin, fashion director of Holt Renfrew were just some of the 500 + industry, media and fashion crowd who came to watch the Greta Constantine fashion show and support the talented design team. Here is a look at some of the standout pieces which received the most crowd appreciation. The fashion show previewed both women’s and men’s collections.

CANADA STYLE ANSWERS READER QUESTIONS.

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Here at CanadaStyle we welcome reader questions. Our editor and writers will choose selected questions and answers to post on the blog. Here are two reader questions from this week. Names are listed in initials for reader privacy.

Question: MJ from Kitchener, Ontario writes:

” Hey, Canada Style. I love reading your blog and watching the videos. But, spring is too far off for me to think of right now. I’m still trying to figure out my winter wardrobe and not spend an arm and a leg. Any suggestions?”

Answer: Hi MJ. Sure we did a really detailed “What to Wear” series for Fall and Winter clothes with CanadaStyle fashion editor and top Canadian fashion designers: Pink Tartan, Greta Constantine, Comrags, Andy-The-Anh and Joeffer Caoc and Izzy Camilleri. Find it here. Our writers also matched up the designers suggestions with really affordable clothing. Check it out and let us know if there is any other information we can provide you with.

Editorial Staff

Question: CM from Kellowna, British Columbia writes:

” Hello Editor. I’m over 35 and am trying to figure if I’m too old to wear these thigh high boots. Is this strictly for younger women?”

Answer: Hello CM. Thanks for writing. You have asked a question that is being asked by women everywhere. My take on this is if you can remember seeing “Pretty Woman” in the theatres, then wearing thigh high, high heeled boots and even shorter skirts to show them off would not be my recommendation. But ultimately it’s not about age, it’s about how you feel. At the end of the day, if you love it and want to wear it, it’s your decision!

For business or daytime wear, I recommend : to the knee or just covering the knee as a flattering and still stylish choice for most women.

For casual or weekend wear: higher over the knee boot can be done in riding boot style or flats in softer suede and worn with leggings and a drapy knit sweater or thinner layers in tunics.

FASHION DESIGNER: DEAN CATEN OF DSQUARED

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

DEAN CANTEN DSQUARED WITH CANADA STYLE BLOG EDITOR.JPGBy Editor.

“Born in Canada, living in London, made in Italy” is an apt description for the dynamic design team made of brothers Dean and Dan Canten who together form DSquared.  Nevertheless when I spoke with Dean Canten, his down to earth manner, warmth and the open smile was very much Canadian.

The brothers, who grew up in Toronto and come from modest means, have created one of the most recognized fashion brands in the world. They style the likes of Madonna, Britney Spears, Gwyneth Paltrow and numerous other celebs and fashionistas. The brothers attended Parson’s School of Design in New York and in 1991 moved to Milan where after working with fashion industry notables such as Versace they launched their men’s line in 1994 and women’s in 2003. Their sophisticated, yet fun fashions infused with Canadian references and coupled with impeccable tailoring and attention to detail continue to win over devoted followers worldwide.

The designers were in town to be honored with a Walk of Fame Star and I had a chance to chat with Dean Canten.

E: I think that DSquared being such a breakout international brand really puts Canada on the fashion map. You made Canadian style cool!  DSquared deserves a Walk of Fame Star and much more. What do you feel has made you such International success? What would you recommend to other Canadian designers?

D. Showing in the major fashion centres such as London, Milan, Paris will help to bring the designer into the international fashion arena. We started by showing our clothes at a tradeshow, not even at fashion week… A buyer liked our clothes and it went from there.

 E. You and your brother are the youngest of nine children and grew up in North Toronto. Are your siblings (other than your brother) in fashion?

 D. No, they all have regular jobs. Dan and I are the only ones in fashion. Our family is why we come back home so often. As to why we are so many? We are Italian.

Not happy to rest on their design laurels, the busy brothers also host their own Satellite radio show on Sirius XM radio and are hosting a reality TV show called ‘Launch My Line” about how to become a designer. The show premieres this Wednesday, Sept.16th on Bravo.

As they say, “You can take the boys out of Canada, but you can never take Canada out of the boys!” And we are lucky for it!
