FASHION NEWS: Photoshop Debate Heats Up

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

demi-moore-photoshopped-cover-of-wThere was a rally last weekend outside of a New York Ralph Lauren store to protest extremely skinny models and altering images.

According to CoCoPerez, Sonia Ossorio from the National Organization of Women said “We’d like retailers to realize that their customer base is women. It’s like, who do they think they are? Making women feel less sexy and less beautiful than we are. Why do they think they have the right to do that?”

Now the U.K.’s Committee of Advertising Practice has a report recommending banning Photoshopping any images targeted at girls 16 or younger. New York Magazine says that the report claims these ads cause unhealthy body image for the impressionable teens. There has been no word on what they will do with the report or whether they are working to change things.

Real Style has been reporting for months now on the debate over using Photoshop and airbrushing images in fashion ads and in fashion magazines. While it has been an industry standard for a long time, lately things have gotten out of hand with the Ralph Lauren ad and the Demi Moore Photoshop scandal. In Britain, they have even banned ads because of the overuse of airbrushing.

Recently V Magazine and Glamour have been leading the change in mindset by featuring plus-size models and regular women for their photos. Many though are still fighting for their right to use extremely skinny models and airbrush their pictures.
