Expert Dental Advice From Dr. Chase

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

In our experts series, we ask our health experts for advice that our Real Style Network beauty fans can use in your real life. Getting the perfect smile isn’t always as simple as brushing your teeth every day. Sometimes you need help from the experts to get your teeth looking their best. We asked our dental expert Dr. Chase about different procedures that can get your teeth looking perfect.

I have heard a lot about Invisalign. How do they work? How long do they need to be used each day?
Invisialign is a virtually invisible series of custom fit aligners that move teeth from their current crooked position to an ideal straight position. In order for the aligners to work you have to wear them 20-22 hours a day except when eating and brushing.

I desperately want to try porcelain veneers. I love the look! My front teeth have a small gap and I want my teeth whiter. Will porcelain veneers help with these problems?
Porcelain veneers are a great way to close spaces, sometimes requiring very little tooth preparation at all. They are also a great way to change the color, shape, and size to the teeth you have always dreamed of.

Is teeth whitening (professional and at-home) safe during pregnancy?
My own wife (mother of 2 soon to be 3) was sad to learn that whitening during pregnancy or breast feeding is not recommended.

Expert Weight Loss Advice From Dr. Sass

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

In our expert tips section, we like to find experts who can give you real advice you can use. It seems like there is always someone around you who is trying to lose weight unsuccessfully. We turned to our resident expert, Dr. Sass, to get tips on the best ways to lose weight.

When it comes to diet and weight loss, is it best to count calories, fat or carbs?
I recommend counting calories first and then fats. Remember, simple carbs (processed foods, sugar, etc.) are much worse than certain fats like olive oil.

What is the newest surgery for weight loss?
Weight loss surgery should only be reserved for people that are morbidly obese and have tried other diets. Gastric Balloon Surgery is the procedure that involves inserting a balloon into the stomach to reduce the amount of food eaten.

Expert Sunburn Advice From Dermatologist Dr. Solish

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

With vacations, trips to the beach and long weekend, this is the time of year that your regular skin care routine may be interrupted by an accidental sunburn. We all try to avoid sunburns by lathering on the sun tan lotion and staying in the shade, but sometimes it happens. We have turned to a skin care expert in our beauty experts section to find out what is the best way to treat a sunburn.

Q: How can I best treat strong sunburn at home?

A: First off if possible avoid the burn. Wear a good sunscreen and clotting to protect yourself. If it is too late then taking Aspirin can help with damage and the discomfort. Also applying mild moisturizers will help with the pain and the peeling that will result from the damaged skin being replaced.

Botox Alternatives – Expert Skin Care Advice From Dr. Solish

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

With all of this talk of young celebrities using Botox before they are 30, we wanted to know if there are any alternatives to the treatment out there. We turned to our skin care expert Dr. Solish for his expert tips on alternative treatments to Botox such as Thermage. Dr. Solish gave us his expert tips on the benefits of both.

When it comes to smoothing out and tightening the skin on the forehead and cheeks, Thermage seems to be a great treatment. Is it a good alternative treatment to Botox?

Thermage is a medical device that uses radiofrequency to tighten the skin.  It looks like a laser but actually does not use any light like most lasers making it safe on all skin types and colours.  By heating the skin with radiofrequency it can stimulate the collagen to tighten and result in a lifting effect of the skin.  Results take up to 4 months to be visible and can last for up to 18-24 months.  Botox is used to relax muscled that cause the formation of lines and wrinkles.  Botox would be recommended more for lines on the forehead, frown area or crows feet.  It can also offer some help for lines around the mouth and neck.  Therefore if one is looking for more of a general tightening and mild lifting of the skin Thermage would be something that may be more effective for them. If there are specific lines that bother a person then Botox or fillers may be more beneficial.

Detoxing – Expert Advice From Dr. Sass

Monday, June 14th, 2010

For today’s Expert Tips advice from our diet and nutrition expert Dr. Sass, we wanted to know the truth about detoxing. There are a number of different detox treatments you can put your body through, but Real Style Network got Dr. Sass’s opinion on whether these treatments are really beneficial.

There is so much buzz about cleanses and detoxing your body. Are these treatments really beneficial to the body?
It is beneficial to detox and cleanse the body. But unfortunately a lot of the “cleansers” out there are nothing more than very powerful anti-constipation medicines. To really de-toxify, you need to start eating toxic-free, organic fruits, vegetables and other foods, drink purified water and drink juices that were grown in a non-toxic manner. Taking laxatives will make you have a big bowel movement and drinking liquids to dehydrate you could make you think you’re losing weight but both are just other ways to steal your money while negatively effecting your health.

Diet Pills – Expert Diet Advice From Dr. Sass

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

For our next question in our Expert Tips series, we asked Dr. Sass for advice on using diet pills to help you lose weight. With everyone trying to stay in shape and look their best, especially through the bikini season, more people are trying to find ways to keep the weight off. We wanted Dr. Sass’s expert opinion on whether taking diet pills was a healthy choice.

With so many diet pills on the market, is there any harm in taking them in conjunction with a healthy weight loss diet and exercise plan?

Only when taken under supervision of a physician. Diet pills are very successful in achieving reasonable goals when used under medical supervision with a good diet and exercise plan. A lot of people are unable to lose weight unless they take diet pills. Asking them to lose weight on their own is like asking to lower their blood pressure without medication. Unfortunately, diet pills have received a bad reputation due to FenPhen. There are at least 3 diet pills on the market that give good results that I believe doctors are under-utilizing. Unfortunately, there are so many fake and unproven diet pills that can be dangerous when ordered over the Internet without a face-to-face meeting with a physician. People can be taking their life into their own hands. I recommend learning more at ASBP.org.

Removing Sun Spots -Expert Skin Care Advice From Dermatologist Dr. Solish

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Real Style Beauty turned to Dr. Solish, one of Canada’s top cosmetic dermatologists for his expert opinion on best beauty practices and skin care treatments. Real Style Beauty will be sharing Dr. Solish’s advice in our Beauty Expert section. Make sure to check back often.

Q: I have sun damage/spots from many years spent lying in the sun during my youth. What is the best treatment for removing or minimizing sun spots?

A)  First of all, those spots should be checked to make sure they are benign, or not dangerous, or other forms of pigmentation like melasma. If they are just brown spots from the sun, then there are some options available in treating them. If it is excess pigment like that seen in melasma, some skin bleaching creams may help. If they are more like freckles or what we refer to as Lentigines, than liquid nitrogen or lasers can be helpful. Your doctor will assess the spots and if there are just a few, may decide with you to try liquid nitrogen. This will injure the skin and cause a small scab to form. As the scab falls off it will often remove some of the pigment, or unwanted colour. There are a few lasers that also do this. The most common one is IPL or Intense Pulsed Light. This light devise will allow the pigmented spots to absorb the energy and destroy some of the unwanted pigment in the skin. Usually this requires multiple treatments and can result in more evenly coloured skin.

Whitening Strips -Expert Dentistry Advice From Dr. Chase

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

We have been speaking to experts collecting their advice for our health and beauty readers. Our most recent health expert is New York City dentist, Dr. Chase. We all want a brighter and whiter smile to look our best and give a great first impression. With Dr. Chase’s expert help, we can acheive that.

Q: Do Crest WhiteStrips work and are they safe? I used them once before and they really made my teeth sensitive so I stopped using them.

A: Whitestrips are one of many over the counter tooth whitening products available that seem to work well for many people, but some people do have problems with the fit, or tooth sensitivity. Your dentists can help provide a custom fit whiteing tray that may decrease the sensitivity and may be able to prescribe a type of whitener that works better for sensitive teeth or even a medicine that helps decrease sensitivity so you can continue to whiten.

Expert Suncare Advice From Dermatologist Dr. Solish

Q: With summer right around the corner, what is the SPF an average adult needs?

A: When picking a sunscreen there are two things to look for.  One is the SPF, or sun protection factor. Usually a 15 is enough BUT that assumes the person is putting on a good thick layer of the sunscreen. Most are not good at applying sunscreen and do not get the full effects of the 15. They may only be getting half of that. That is one of the reasons I recommend a SPF of 30 or higher. Also is you are very fair it may not be enough to stop you from burning. The second thing to look for is a sunscreen that blocks UVA light. That is not measured by the SPF. Usually it will say UVA or broadspectrum sunscreen on the bottle. Another good thing to look for is a sunscreen recommended by the Canadian or American dermatology associations.

Expert Dentistry Advice From Dr. Chase

We have been speaking to experts collecting their advice for our health and beauty concerned readers. Our most recent health expert is New York City dentist, Dr. Chase. We all want a brighter and whiter smile to look our best and give a great first impression. With Dr. Chase’s expert help we can acheive that. We first wanted to know how Dr. Chase suggest we get those pearly whites even whiter.

Q: What causes discoloration of teeth? Is there any way I can minimize discoloration on a day to day basis?

A: Tooth discoloration is cause by many factors:

a) Medicine
b) Illness
c) Diet(coffee, red wine, colas)
d) Cigarattes
e) Poor hygiene
f) Trauma
g) Discolored or old fillings
h) Genetics
i) Age
j) Excess fluoride

While many of these factors cannot be prevented, some can… Certainly discontinuing the use of tobacco products and reducing the dark colored liquids and foods you consume along with good oral hygiene will keep teeth whiter.

dr-timothy-chaseFor many people, even those with naturally dark teeth, using a good whitening product can help you achieve a nicer, white smile.

Expert Health & Diet Advice From Dr. Sass

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Real Style Network’s beauty blog asked Bariatric Physician Dr. Sasson E. Moulavi for his expert health and diet advice for our readers. As a part of our Expert Tips section, we will be sharing Dr. Sass’s valuable knowledge and tips on how to stay healthy. Make sure to check back here for more health and diet tips from Dr. Sass.

Q: There has been a lot of talk lately about so-called “superfoods”. Items like goji berries and quinoa are often referred to as “superfoods”. What are your recommended superfoods?

A: I don’t believe people should look at super foods so much. They are usually rich in only one nutrient. I recommend a combination of super foods to get a balanced diet. A few of my favorites:
• Almonds: a great source of Vitamin E, good amounts of magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, fiber and good source of healthy monounsaturated fats. Contain more calcium than any other nut. Eating almonds in moderation promotes lower cholesterol levels, prevents heart disease and can help with weight loss.
• Acai Berry: Contains powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants may help reduce the risk of some diseases, such as heart disease and cancer.
• Pomegranate: May contain close to 3 times the antioxidants as green tea or red wine. Also combats hardening of the arteries and related diseases like heart attacks and strokes. Research shows that pomegranate may help lower bad cholesterol, lower blood pressure, fight osteoarthritis and keep prostate cancer from returning.

Expert Dry Skin Care Advice From Dermatologist Dr. Solish

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Real Style Beauty turned to Dr. Solish, one of Canada’s top cosmetic dermatologists for his expert opinion on best beauty practices and skin care treatments. Real Style Beauty will be sharing Dr. Solish’s advice in our Beauty Expert section. Make sure to check back here often.

Q: Many people suffer from dry and flaky summer skin. Over the counter drugstore moisturizers don’t always deliver the best results. Is there any product line or treatment that can be recommended to help nourish dry summer skin?

A: Usually changes in the season can affect our skin. If the dryness or flaking persists then moisturizers are helpful. Sometimes it is a matter of finding the right one. Generally moisturizers have different oil contents in them. The more oil the better they are at stopping the water loss in yior skin and preserving the moisture.

If you rub a moisturizer on your skin and it is cool feeling it may have less oil than one that gets warm. Be careful as moisturizers with a lot of oil can also clog pores and cause acne. If your moisturizer isn’t working then also look for ones that have lactic acid, urea or what are called humectants in them. These can help. If the problem persists see your family doctor or dermatologist as you may have a form of dermatitis or eczema.

Makeup Tips – Applying Blush

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Blush is one of the most frequently used beauty products and women both young and old use it to highlight cheekbones and give skin a healthy, natural glow. Our friends at Women’s Health Magazine are helping us answer some commonly asked questions readers have about blush. What are the most flattering shades and how do I properly apply it?

applyingmakeup4Use your eye color as your guide…

Blue Eyes: Use peach or icy pink. This will draw attention to light eyes. Do not use plum, as this will minimize your eyes.
Green Eyes: Use any shade of pink, for a striking look. Do not use deep plum it neutralizes the yellow flecks in green.
Brown Eyes: Use berry hues. Yellow tints in your brown eyes will pop against pinkish plums. Do not use neutrals, they blend into the undertones of your eyes.
Hazel Eyes: Use a pink with violet undertones. Do not use orangey pinks, they dull the gray in hazel.

Learn how to apply the blush for your face shape:

Oval: Use a brush to dust blush onto the apples of your cheeks.
Round: Apply in a vertical line from the centers of your apples to just about your jawbone.
Long: Blend blush along your hairline and outer edges of your cheekbones.
Square: Dust into the hollows of your cheeks.

Sexy, Full Hair for 2010

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Voluminous hair is making a comeback.  As more and more stars are opting for fuller, more voluminous hair, stylists and hair care companies are once again trying to find ways to get the high-volume looks without a lot of hassle or product.

Hair BeautyIn the 80’s (the big hair decade), women achieved volume by teasing, mousse and a ton of hair spray.  According to celebrity hairstylist Philip Pelusi, who is well-known for his signature VolumetricR haircutting technique, women today still crave volume, but don’t necessarily want the “big hair” look that is outdated and requires too much gel, spray and teasing.

Here are Philip Pelusi’s tips for achieving volume in 2010 – without looking like you’re in the wrong decade:

1. Use a volumizing conditioner and shampoo: Volumizing products (such as the P2 InCrease Volumizze Shampoo and Conditioner) are formulated not to weigh hair down.  Be careful to apply conditioner only to ends.

2. Give Your Roots a Boost: Apply a root lifter before blow-drying, from midshaft to root (try Mod di Phy Define Root Lift Volumize Spray).

3. Blow dry for “oomph”: Lift sections of hair toward the sky as you blow-dry, directing hot air toward your scalp.

4. Don’t blow-dry upside-down: To keep volume moderized, do not flip your head over.
