RISE IN DRUGSTORE BEAUTY SALES

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

drugstore.jpgThere was an interesting article in yesterday’s Globe & Mail.  The article discussed the concept of women seeking the comfort of beauty products and in doing so have shifted from department store buying to drugstore buying.

Both Shoppers Drug Mart and Jean Coutu Group reported that they have seen a surge in beauty sales as they lure customers from other retailers.  Shoppers Drug Mart has had great success with its “beauty boutiques” and plan to expand its upscale beauty brands.

I personally think it’s a great idea.  In many cases, the drugstores have better deals on the brand name items and can offer more in the way of customer service.  It’s nice to no longer need to go to a department store for Clarins or Estee Lauder.

KATE WINSLET REVELATIONS

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

In today’s beauty news, Kate Winslet recently revealed exclusively to Marie Claire UK that she was bullied as a child and had the nickname “Blubber”.

As an outspoken advocate for “real beauty”, she went on to tell the magazine, “I do think it’s important for young women to know that magazine covers are re-touched.  People don’t really look like that.  In my films, I may look glamorous, but I’ve been in hair and makeup for two hours.”

SKIN CARE – BEAUTY REVIEW

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Name: Boots No7 Restore & Renew

General Comments: So, I finally got the chance to pick up the Boots No7 Restore & Renew.  It’s been available in Canada for awhile, so last week, I thought I would give it a try. Ever since hearing about the BBC documentary that confirmed that Boots No7 Protect & Perfect (what’s it’s called in the UK) could do as it claimed, the anti-aging serum line was on my list of products to try.

Scientists with Manchester University were asked to conduct tests on Boots No7 Protect & Perfect.  They discovered that Boots No7 Protect & Perfect was able to show similar results to retinoic acid, a prescription-only treatment.  Prior to this, it was not believed that an over-the-counter anti-aging cream could match the effectiveness of Tretinoin.  Needless to say, the product became a sensation with UK buyers and an estimated 1 in 3 women own a No7 product.

I have only been using the product for about two weeks, but I have seen some positive changes in my skin.  It definitely feels softer and my fine lines do appear minimized.  My skin is a bit more even looking and I feel like it has a calming effect on my skin (I have very sensitive skin).  If I continue to use this product through winter, I would likely add a moisturizer on top of this to keep dryness at bay.

Approx Price:  $25.00

Where to Get It:  Shoppers Drug Mart, Target and department stores across North America.

BEAUTY BEDDING HITS UK

Monday, April 27th, 2009

60s.JPG
In today’s beauty news, it has recently been reported in the UK that sales of bed pillows and sheets made from high-tech materials has risen by 150% in the last four weeks!

Bedding manufacturers claim that super tiny particles in their products release more ions that ordinary molecules and will reduce the appearance of wrinkles after only six weeks.

Check out the full article here.  Will this beauty bedding craze hit North America?  Only time will tell, but I don’t think it will surprise anyone if it does!

34 WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCTS RECALLED

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

34 popular weight loss products are being recalled because FDA tests show they contain sibutramine, the active ingredient in the appetite suppressant Meridia.  The recalled weight loss products aren’t FDA approved and their labels don’t note that they contain sibutramine.

“FDA advises that these products may pose a threat to consumers because sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke,” states a news release from Universal ABC Beauty Supply International.

Check out the article on WebMD for more information and a list of products being recalled.

MAKEUP – BEAUTY REVIEW

Name: L’Oreal Colour Riche Serum Infused Lipcolour

cr1.jpgGeneral Comments:
I read about this line in Allure and am a huge fan of L’Oreal’s Glam Shine, so I picked this one up.  Its supposed to be very moisturizing and smoothing.  I bought the colour British Red (it’s what Beyonce was wearing in the Allure print ads).  It’s a bold red, perfect for summer nights.

Overall, it’s a nice lipstick and the shade is great.  It’s not however, moisturizing enough for me.  My lips frequently get dry and that’s why I normally wear a lot of glosses.  To keep my lips moisturized, I layered this lipstick with clear, light gloss.  If you don’t have dry lips, I would recommend this product.

Approx Price: $9.99

Where to Get It: Drug and department stores nationwide.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Brooke Shields recently told People Magazine “People say, ‘I love my wrinkles.’  I don’t love my wrinkles – come on!  I’m proud of my longevity more than anything else.  There’s a lot to be said for endurance.  I’m trying to find the beauty in the whole picture rather than the crow’s feet.”
