For city slickers who are aiming for a break from the towering skyscrapers and crowded streets, an escape to small town Ontario may be the perfect retreat. Although scenic destinations like Niagara-on-the-Lake are well known to Canadians and foreigners alike, there are a number of quaint townships in the province which are worth a visit. Whether your heart is leading you to St. Jacobs or Dundas, Ontario this spring, here are a few spots to keep in mind for your next weekend getaway.<\/p>\n

St. Jacobs: <\/strong>Located north of Waterloo, this southwestern Ontario community is easily recognized by the traditional Mennonite culture which can instantly transport visitors back in time. St. Jacobs features charming streets marked by old-fashioned horses and buggies, due to the town\u2019s large Mennonite population. The town\u2019s local farmer\u2019s market is open on Thursdays and Saturdays year-round, and features Ontario foods and crafts. Visit the outdoor market square for fresh produce, or drop by the market farm yard for a glimpse at the local critters. If you have a sweet tooth, the Maple Syrup Museum aims to explain this Canadian tradition to guests and also sells the sweet sap.<\/p>\n

Elora: <\/strong>This township in Wellington County is home to the magnificent Elora Gorge, which sets at the western edge of the town. Popular among campers, the gorge is also a destination for hiking, fishing and canoeing. It overlooks the Grand River, which flows throughout southwestern Ontario and past impressive 22-metre cliffs. While you\u2019re in town, drop by the Cork Restaurant for specialties like duck breast or ahi tuna, and take in the historical stone architecture of downtown Elora. Meanwhile, the Elora Culinary Walking Tour promises to bring visitors on a tour of the town\u2019s most tempting eats.<\/p>\n

Dundas: <\/strong>As a community which is part of Hamilton, Ontario, this once-independent town boasts a population of about 25,000. Dundas is known for its picturesque scenery, which consists of 19th<\/sup> century buildings, surrounding waterfalls and local hiking trails. For a true Dundas experience, soak up the town\u2019s culture and history at the Dundas Museum and Archives, or drop by for the International Dundas Buskerfest from June 3 to June 5.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
