Canadian Travel: Visit Ottawa For The Tulip Festival – May 8 – 18

Nothing says Spring has arrived more than attending the annual Tulip Festival in Ottawa Ontario, this year running from May 8th – May 18th. The festival is the largest of its kind in the world, attracting over 600,000 visitors each year to see its collection of over 1,000,000 tulips. It’s something you just have to see for yourself.

The festival can be traced back to 1945 when the Netherlands sent over 100,000 tulip bulbs in appreciation of Canada sheltering Holland’s exiled royal family during World War II and in recognition of the role Canadian troops played in the liberation of the Netherlands. The first official festival began in 1953.

You can spot over 50 varieties of tulips blooming in public spaces across the Canadian capital, with the highest concentration  in the flower beds of Commissioners Park. The festival has more than just tulips however. You can also enjoy fireworks, buskers, WWII vehicles and re-enactments.
