Travel: Montreal Top May 2015 Events
Typically one of the nicest months of the year in Montreal is May, and with the amount of activities you can be doing in the city during the month you’ll find plenty of opportunities to be outside in it. Here are our favourite things you can do this month.
Bust A Move may start on April 29th this year, but it ends on May 3rd, which is when the competition really starts to heat up. If you like movies like Step Up and StreetDance, why not experience it in real life. Bust A Move is a dance competition where over 250 competitors come from around the world to compete. There are different competitions as well, from individual or in duos in six different styles (locking, popping, hiphop, house, top rock and waacking). You can also attend one of many outdoor events and programs other than just watching the dancers do their stuff.
Have you ever wanted to be part of a musical production? Now’s your chance with 21 Balancoires (21 Swings in English) where each swing creates a new note. If all 21 swings are going at the same time a melody is created. The installation was custom-made for the Promenade des Artistes in the Quartier des Spectacles, and is only around until May 31st. It was created by Daily tous les jours, in collaboration with animal behaviourist Luc-Alain Giraldeau from UQAM and composer Radwan Ghazi Moumneh.
May is also Mount Royal Month in Montreal. In celebration of the mountain in the middle of the city, several events are taking place, from several different guided tours to free concerts and art lessons. You can also take part in helping to keep the mountain clean by participating in the annual mountain clean up day on May 3rd. You can see the entire schedule here.
Perhaps you’d rather take a taste of some of Montreal’s famous cocktails, well from May 5th – 11th you can do just that during Montreal Cocktail Week. Over 20 restaurants and bars are participating in this event where you will not only get to taste the beverages, but see them prepared as well. This is only the second year of the event, but thanks to last year’s success it may be even busier this year.
Looking for a good laugh? Then look no further than Montreal SketchFest running from May 21st – May 30th. Montreal is well know for its comedy festivals, and this one features troupes from all over North America performing various kinds of sketch comedy. Most shows are at the Theatre Ste Catherine, but some are located at other venues across the city.
