See Fashion Designer’s Martin Margiela Documentary

Movies about fashion designers have been coming out one after another in the last couple of years. Some, like Yves Saint Laurent, are biopics that took a look at the designer’s life, while others, including Dior and I, Iris and the recently aired Traceable are a more traditional documentary.  The latest is Alison Chernick’s short The Artist Is Absent, about Martin Margiela.

The Artist Is Absent premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival, is now available online, courtesy of its producer, the online fashion store Yoox. The documentary features interviews with Jean Paul Gaultier, Raf Simons and Olivier Saillard, curator of the City of Paris’s fashion museum, and it is all about Martin Margiela the designer, not Martin Margiela the brand. Sometimes it is easy to forget that there is a difference.

Not surprising, Martin Margiela himself is not in the documentary, after all hardly anyone outside his family and friends ever saw his face, but you do get to see bits and pieces of his shows. You get to experience fashion as he saw it when he controlled his company, and not as it has turned into now under the guidance of John Galliano.

The short documentary can be watched in its entirety below, so sit back, watch, and enjoy an interesting piece of fashion history.
