How to Protect Your Patio Furniture in Winter
Now that the cold weather is among us, it is time to bid farewell to your outdoor furniture that you’ve lounged around in basking in the sun. Even though it’s a sad moment, it is time to get down to business. These easy and simple steps will help to protect your beloved patio furniture so that you can use them year after year.
Step 1: Clean It
The most important step to getting your patio furniture ready for storage is to clean it. This will prevent damage and also make it so much easier to clean when you bring out the furniture again. A good clean will get rid of dirt and moisture, which as most of you may know causes mold and mildew, and that’s just something no one wants. You can clean your furniture simply by using any kind of dish soap and warm water or furniture wipes such as the Goo-Gone Patio Furniture Wipes, which is known to work wonders.
And don’t forget about the cushions! They need some attention too. Cushions can get a little dull looking, so spruce them up by mixing a Photo: laundry detergent with warm water and scrubbing lightly with a sponge.
Step 2: Give It a Coat
After you give your furniture a good clean it is time to add some protection to ensure that your furniture will look good as new for next spring/summer. If you have aluminum or plastic furniture a thin layer of car wax will do the trick, and for wicker furniture it is best to use paste wax.
It is important to make sure that you are checking your furniture for rust and removing it right away. A great away to get rid of rust and to help prevent it from returning is to use a wire brush to remove it and then just spray on some silicone sealant.
Step 3: Store It/Cover It Up
To really help prolong your furniture it is best to store it inside. I know it might be a little tricky to make some room, but try to make something happen. Garages, sheds, and basements are some great places to store away your outdoor furniture. If you are storing your furniture in a garage or shed it would be a good idea to put bed sheets over the furniture just for some added protection and help keep any bugs away.
If you are able to make room then great, but if you tried and it’s just not going to happen then don’t you worry because there is a solution. Invest in some high quality furniture covers. Furniture covers provide great protection, and the good thing is that you will be able to use them year after year. They come in a variety of sizes so you will have no problems finding what you need.
