This Thursday PEN Canada kicked off the 35th International Festival of Authors with a benefit hosting renowned Canadian film director David Cronenberg at the Fleck Dance Theatre in the Harbourfront Centre.

The IFOA is an annual literary festival celebrating the world’s best modern and contemporary authors right here on the Canadian stage. This year’s edition welcomes more than 150 authors from 20 countries who will be participating in over 100 events. Some things to look forward to are: round-table discussions, literary award ceremonies, public author readings and book signings from authors like Jeffery Deaver, author of The Bone Collector and The Skin Collector.

This year’s headliner is David Cronenberg who spoke with philosophy professor Mark Kingwell, from the University of Toronto, about his debut book, Consumed, which was released less than a month ago.

Known for such films as A History of Violence, Videodrome and The Fly, Cronenberg has been widely considered one of the most influential film directors alive. This is why his interest in fiction writing has drawn so much international attention.

Cronenberg is known for his dark, sexually charged films and Consumed—which is his first novel—is no different. Kingwell and Cronenberg’s intimate discussion ranged from topics about passion, to modern technology and consumerism, as well as explorations into philosophy and even global politics.

In addition to a short reading, Cronenberg delighted the audience with personal anecdotes about his film career, his childhood growing up in Toronto and answered questions from the engaged audience attending the event that evening.

If the PEN Benefit is any example of what to expect from this year’s IFOA, then this is one festival you have to attend.
