How To Spend Your Labor Day Weekend In Canada


With summer winding down to a screeching halt, we’re already eagerly waiting for the return of endless summer days and balmy nights. Luckily, there is still one final summer weekend of sand, sunshine and the great outdoors before everyone heads back to campus or the office. From Toronto to Halifax, here’s our guide to the best events across Canada for a fabulous Labour Day weekend:

Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), Toronto, until September 1: If you haven’t already had your annual fill of rides, carnival food, a mandatory trip to the Food Building and midway games, be sure to stop by the CNE at Exhibition Grounds. The CNE wraps up on Labour Day, with the Air Show from 1:00- 4:00 p.m. on September 1.

Festival Orientalys, Montreal, August 29-September 1: Escape to Montreal for workshops, live performances and exotic cuisine at this end-of-summer multicultural festival on the city’s Jacques Cartier Quay. Whether you’re craving Turkish culture, a taste of India or an exotic getaway to Japan, the festival promises to transport you to the east.

Marshville Heritage Festival, Wainfleet, ON, August 30- September 1: If you haven’t explored Niagara region this summer, head to this laidback family-friendly event. With a combination of wagon rides, a roast beef dinner, canoe building and crafts, the Heritage Festival is your perfect break from city life.

Fair at the PNE, Vancouver, until September 1: With the Plain White T’s performing at a free concert on August 29 and over 50 rides,the PNE promises to be a fun-filled dramatic exit to your summer. Be sure to drop by the 4-H agriculture festival, food vendors and a 35-foot climbing wall.

RCMP Musical Ride, Edmonton, August 30-31: Drop by the Whitemud Equine Learning Centre for afternoon performances starring the RCMP horses. If you’re a horse lover, you definitely won’t be disappointed.

SandJam Halifax, August 29-31: Beach volleyball devotees who can’t wait to soak up the last rays of summer will be ecstatic for this event, which brings us the Canadian National Team Beach Volleyball Championships! Head down to the stunning harbour area of Halifax for volleyball and a SandJam summer concert, featuring Vancouver-based indie rock band The New Pornographers.
