francis henry ago exhibitWhether you’re looking for something to do on a rainy spring Sunday or want to experience a new culture, there’s nothing better than visiting an art gallery. Toronto is full of fantastic art and artists. From photography to sculpture, there’s always something new to see in Toronto’s art scene. Here are a few Toronto galleries with art exhibits opening in April.

Francis Bacon and Henry Moore: Terror and Beauty

April 5-July 20 at AGO

With more than 130 artworks, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and archival materials, this art exhibit draws on the artists’ experiences during times of conflict and violence.  Each piece examines how the two artists reflected differently upon torment. This is the first Canadian exhibition of Bacon’s work and includes rarely seen Moore art pieces.

China by Scott Conarroe

April 5-May 3 at Stephen Bulger Gallery

The third solo exhibit by Canadian photographer Scott Conarroe showcases China against the backdrop of a railway expansion that rivals America’s Interstates in both scope and intent. With imagery from this ongoing study, some earlier impressions, and a surprising new strain of street work, “China” describes a vast historical moment shot with human-scale dramas.

27th Annual Images Festival

April 10-19 at various locations throughout Toronto

The Images Festival is the largest festival in North America for experimental and independent moving image culture. Film and video screenings (ON SCREEN), live performances (LIVE IMAGES) and media art installations (OFF SCREEN) by renowned Canadian and international artists will be presented in local galleries. Images provides audiences with an annual extravaganza of contemporary moving image culture.

Spring Awakening: Gardiner in Bloom

April 25-27 at the Gardiner Museum

Flowers are the sign of spring, so celebrate it with stunning large-scale floral installations at this exhibit. Designed by some of Toronto’s best floral designers, these flower art pieces bring the beauty of spring, and the Gardiner’s collection, to life in an entirely new way.
