Designer Picks: Comrags Share Their Fall Must Haves
Joyce Gunhouse and Judy Cornish, the design duo behind Comrags, cited “a time before the influence of celebrity” as their inspiration for their Fall/Winter 2012 collection. For our Designer Picks series, we talked to Joyce and Judy for their unique take of the trends of the season.
1) The Shirt Dress because it is smart, crisp, and very forgiving. The Lester Dress, $310, in crush.
2) The LBD is always an essential piece to have in your wardrobe. This season our little black dress is not so little – The Bea ($360), The Arthur ($385), and Faithful Dress ($410) have stunning details that make these dresses unique but with an uncompromising ease. All in satin back crepe.
3) The cozy sweater. This is a must-have especially in Canada! For fall we have a few but our staff’s favourite is the Dougall Sweater – an exaggerated men’s sweater ($295).
What are you favourite trends this season and why?
We love the influence The Great Gatsby will have on fashion this season. You can see this trend in our Jolene Dress ($295) in Georgette Print. We also love The Boy Suit. We love it so much that we have done a few suits that meet this trend: The Wyatt Jacket, $420, and Craig Pant, $280, in midnight waffle and the Buffalo Jacket, $395, and Lint Pant, $290, in wool tweed.
What are your favourite fall accessories and why?
We don’t often do accessories but found some beautiful handmade necklaces by Vanessa Maltese. They work for us because they are beautiful but not precious ($95-$195).
What are some of the biggest style mistakes women make in the fall?
I think one of the biggest mistakes women make in the fall is to forget about fit and just drown one’s self in bulky clothes. We have done some wool tweed pieces with lots of shape so that you can be all woolly and feminine — The Manning Dress ($360).
How do you define the look and feel of your fall collection?
It is always a bit hard for us to define the season, actually any season! What stands out most for this collection are the details: notched collars, cutouts, satin binding, asymmetrical tucks, seaming in unexpected places…
