World Mastercard Fashion Week Day 1: Lucian Matis, Korhani, Holt Renfrew & More.

by Melanie Kerr

The first official day of World Mastercard Toronto Fashion Week has wrapped, with Lucian Matis, Korhani, several amazing Canadian designers featured in the Holt Renfrew show and Pavoni, the night was filled with great Canadian fashion and proved how truly talented our homegrown designers are.

The Royal York ballroom was packed  and without an empty seat in the house, Lucian Matis’ Fall 2012 collection did not disappoint. Models walked down the runway wearing intricate dresses with feathers inspired by the linear details in nature. I loved that a few of the models wore rabbit ears. It was a whimsical and quirky touch to the extremely sophisticated collection.

From the Royal York, the fashion masses made the trek to David Pecault Square for the first show under the World Mastercard Toronto Fashion Week tents. What a start it was! Korhani gave us drama and theatrics. It really is amazing to believe that they could turn carpet into couture. Gowns made from rugs were both punky with studding and regal complete with Venetian masks. The audience cheered as the models walked out holding piglets. With fashion’s elite talking about the piggy appearances long after the final walk, it’s clear that they added tons of cuteness and stole the show.

Korhani wasn’t the only show to bring the theatrics. Holt Renfrew started their show off with a very enthusiastic tap dancer. His dancing and upbeat attitude put a smile on the face of even the most serious fashion mavens. Dennis Merotto, Jeremy Laing, Judith & Charles, Lida Baday, Line, Mackage, Smythe and Twenty Cluny all presented selections of their fall line during the Holt Renfrew show. We can expect great outerwear for next fall from Smythe, a Kate Middleton favourite. Line showed cool downtown loose knits, some with leather to add edge. Sequins were all over the runway from Twenty Cluny and Jeremy Laing gave us oversized bleach stained blazers and tailored separates, perfect for the girls with an edgy flair.

With backstage beauty interviews, chatting with designers, and plenty of fashion shows this week, I will have many more reviews to come. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for day two of fashion week. See photos of all of the shows below.
