The ShOws T.O. Day 1: Ruffian and David Szeto Fall 2012

by Melanie Kerr

Just when you thought the excitement of fashion week was over, we have more coverage of great Fall 2012 lines from some of Canada’s most established designers. The Ritz Carlton ballroom was turned into the perfect runway setting, to showcase David Szeto and Ruffian’s Fall 2012 collections for The Shows. Fresh off of walking for Zac Posen and Rad Hourani’s fall collections in New York, Canada’s own supermodel Liisa Winkler hosted the event while wearing a beautiful emerald green David Szeto cocktail dress. Check back tomorrow to see what Canadian favourites Jean Pierre Braganza and Jeremy Laing have up their sleeves for the next fall season.

David Szeto

This Vancouver born, Paris based designer showed us modest and contemporary dresses in bold colours and graphic prints with fun gold chain belts which kept the look simple and sophisticated, and not over accessorized or styled. The gold chained accents popped up again in a beautiful above the knee quarter sleeved black wool coat, the gold buttons and ruffled trim on the sleeve paired perfectly with the feminine and romantic collection.  To toughen up the super girly pieces, models walked the runway with cool silver eyeshadow with heavy eyeliner and choppy extensions several shades lighter, which was mixed in with their natural hair. We even spotted models wearing white pumps, what used to be a no-no is now about to become a new fall staple according to David Szeto. Watch the finale of the shoe here:

While David Szeto’s collection was completely feminine, Ruffian showed us menswear inspired outerwear with below the knee plaid coats adorned with military buttons, plaids with purples and navy in wide leg trousers, and bold red and cobalt blue coats accessorized with wide brimmed fedoras in matching colours. Ruffian did offer something for the girls who are a little less androgynous, a crushed velvet wrap dress with a ruffle trim and cap sleeve, we suspect that velvet will once again be a huge trend for holiday parties. Flowing blouses in cream paired with leather pencil skirts gave us a happy medium of soft and romantic mixed with daring and edgy, perfect for a night out, or swap the leather and it’s completely appropriate for your corporate attire.
