Pan Am Fashion Continues To Soar
While ratings for Pan Am may be dipping and rumours abound that the show may be cancelled, their retro 60’s fashion is still a hot topic. The stars are scoring top points for how they have embodied the retro style. With Banana Republic currently selling a retro Mad Men inspired collection and trends such as gloves and structured handbags popular for Fall, our retro fashion obsession doesn’t seem to have an end in sight.
Set in 1963, Christina Ricci, Karine Vanasse, Margot Robbie and Kelli Garner star as Pan Am flight attendants who were the epitome of glamour in their heyday; with classic blue uniforms created by heavyweight designers Evan Picone, Edith Head and Adolfo. According to reports the one real vintage Pan Am uniform on set has been insured for $100,000. Many of the other costumes come from vintage stores and outlets from around the world.
Pan Am’s costume designer Ane Crabtree said in an interview that the cast had to stop working out to complete the aesthetic of the show because back then women were curvier. She said, “Every period has different body shapes… Muscles are firmer now, so I have to ask the women to please lay off working out because bodies were softer, and the clothes laid on the bodies so differently in 1963. Also, the clothing silhouettes are leaner, especially for men. The silhouettes have gotten way more bulky today.”
It’s easier than ever to steal the style from these retro shows. Your local vintage store is your best resource to find original garments, but if vintage isn’t your style, there is the aforementioned Banana Republic’s Mad Men collection or designer lines from Burberry Prorsum, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Alberta Ferretti and Marni who were all inspired by mod-60’s style.
