Interview With Coccolily’s Naana Tennachie Yankey
Ghana born Naana Tennachie Yankey drew inspiration from the bright colours and interesting cutouts native to her African heritage for the Spring collection of her women’s label, Coccolily. Fusing together Naana’s experience as a former Marc Jacobs intern and as a global traveller, Coccolily is for the adventurous fashionette who appreciates crisp tailoring with a funky twist. We spoke to Naana at her collection preview to find out more about this Canadian gem.
Real Style: How did you get your start in fashion?
Naana Tennachie Yankey: The very first start was when I did my internship with Marc Jacobs in New York, that’s what really opened up my eyes and showed me that this is exactly what I want to do.
Real Style: Where do you get your inspiration from for your designs?
Naana Tennachie Yankey: It’s really more about my life, I don’t follow trends I just follow my feelings and experiences I grew up in so many different countries, I grew up in different continents, I grew up in Africa, different parts of Europe, United States and now in Canada, my next collection, which I wont say now, but it’s inspired by a city in Europe that I’m actually going to spend some time in. So, if I travel somewhere or my football team from my home in Ghanda does great, anything that is emotional inspires me, but not necessarily trends.
Real Style: How would you describe the Coccolily customer?
Naana Tennachie Yankey: The Coccolily customer is a woman that is open to new experiences, and it really comes from my life of traveling and being open to different things. She’s open to new cuts, new colours, new presentation. She’s very sexy and she’s not afraid to stand out in public. She’s really not afraid to attract good attention to her.
Real Style: Will you be showing at Montreal or Toronto fashion week?
Naana Tennachie Yankey: Yes I’m 100% showing at Montreal Fashion Week in September, I’m still considering if I’ll be showing at LG Fashion Week. I did show at LG Fashion Week last year, I believe it was a full season but I am definitely considering it for September.
Real Style: What’s your vision for your runway show?
Naana Tennachie Yankey: I can’t say too much without revealing it all, but it’s going to be my best work ever definitely.
Canadian’s can find Coccolily designs at ShopGirls in Toronto, Boutique 1861 in Montreal, Myasho in England or at their online boutique.
