FASHION SHOWS: Diane Von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs & Derek Lam
Some of America’s top fashion designers showed their fall collections at New York Fashion Week over the past few days. Here is a look at some of the shows:
Diane Von Furstenberg
Diane von Furstenberg was inspired by women of the frontier, pioneers and rodeo for her fall line. To fulfill her inspiration DVF offered up long dresses and jumpsuit with large prints and sometimes cut outs, western style blouses and button down shirts and wide leg pants. Outerwear included coloured furs and printed leather jackets. Eveningwear had a retro 70’s feel in the long sparkling gowns. Accessories includes wide brimmed hats and cowboy boots. The line had a wide variety of items for the DVF fan. See the show here:
For fall Donna Karan showed a very ladylike line complete with pearls on every model. Her fall eponymous collection continued her love of neutral colours sticking with mainly grey and tan shades. There was a good portion of glamourous business attire with updated power suits, pencil skirts and luxe draped blouses. Her draping continued into trousers, tops and dresses. All of the looks included elbow length gloves and many models wore fur stoles and carried structured handbags to complete the ladylike style. See the full Donna Karan show here:
This season, instead of tapping into an outside resource Marc Jacobs took his inspiration from himself. By looking back at his own work, Marc created a fun line with lots to look at. While the overall theme of the line was polka dots, it wasn’t just spotted garments heading down the runway. Jacobs created the dots on a pleathora of fabrics including shiny latex and rubber, lace and fur (both faux and real). The looks were unconventionally traditional with knee length pencil skirts, oversized menswear inspired jackets and a lot of the basics (trousers and blouses) done Marc Jacobs style. Skirt suits and sheath dresses with structured handbags reminded you off Jacobs’ retro lines from last season. See the whole show here:
Instead of trying to create something we’ve never seen before, Derek Lam reinvented the classic for fall. Lam updated classic American sportwear by using luxe fabrics and playing with length and proportion. He offered colourful pea coats (some with the sleeves removed), two tone wide leg trousers, waxed fur (making it waterproof) and layering cropped jackets over long sweaters. For eveningwear Lam went with gowns with full flowing skirts, draped dresses and jumpsuits. Watch the Derek Lam fashion show here:
