Top Canadian-Made Films To Help Celebrate Canada Day
Canada Day 2020 is upon us, and while we may not be celebrating the holiday the same way we have in the past, it’s still possible to enjoy everything that is Canada by watching some of the top films made in this country over the years. Here are some of our favourites.
Goin’ Down The Road: It’s almost impossible to make a list of this kind without talking about this 1970 film. This heartfelt and honest movie follows the story of two friends who travel from Nova Scotia to Toronto. The duo are looking to find a better life, but what they find instead is a life of drifting from job to job as they try to enjoy the big city.
Bon Cop Bad Cop: If an action/comedy film is more your style, this one about two Canadian detectives forced to team up might just be perfect. After a murder victim is found on the Ontario/Quebec border a police officer from each province have to work together to solve it. To make this even more of a Canadian film, the victim is a hockey executive, and the killer is hunting hockey managers.
Black Christmas: If you are a fan of horror movies, this one should interest you. Not only is it inspired by terrible true crimes in Montreal, but it is also considered to be the first slasher film ever made. It’s the story of a group of sorority sisters who are hunted down one by one by a mysterious killer during the winter break.
Cube: This science fiction film follows seven strangers as they attempt to escape the booby-trapped puzzle box they find themselves trapped in. The film has a huge cult following, and inspired the Saw franchise of films that came years later.
Empire of Dirt: A single mom returns home after her daughter starts hanging out with the wrong crowd, forcing her to confront her own issues she’d left behind. Empire of Dirt tells the story of three generation of Cree woman, and the challenges they’ve faced throughout their lives.
One Week: After discovering he has one week to live, a Torontonian makes his way to Tofino, British Columbia on his motorbike. This touching, thought-provoking film takes you on a cross country journey, highlighting some of the very best the country has to offer.
