San Diego Comic-Con 2020 Canceled

2020 has now seen another cancellation, and this one is a big one. The organizers of the San Diego Comic-con released a statement today confirming that the annual event would be cancelled.

In the statement, the organization said “For the first time in its 50-year history San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), the organizers behind the annual pop culture celebration, announced today with deep regret that there will be no Comic-Con in 2020. The event will instead return to the San Diego Convention Center from July 22-25, 2021. Recognizing that countless attendees save and plan for its conventions each year, and how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, they had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer. Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year.”

The pop culture event has grown in the past decade to include more than just comic books. It’s become known for releasing new information about upcoming movies and TV shows, with hundreds of celebrities attending to be a part of it. The even was scheduled to begin on July 23rd, but fans will need to wait another year if they plan on attending. More than 130,000 fans attend the event each year, and are crammed in together tightly, so social distancing wouldn’t have been an option. On top of that, many films and tv shows already have had their schedules changed and would have a hard time getting anything together in time. The event brings in $88 million to the city of San Diego, and the cancellation is another blow to the city’s economy.

Fans who have already purchased their passes (and if they were planning on attending they would have done so by now) can request a refund, or transfer their badges to the 2021 event. E-Mails will be sent out letting them know how to do so. All hotels reservations will also be cancelled, with deposits refunded.
