Top 10 Films Of The Last Decade

What makes a good movie? Is it trophies won from awards shows, or is it box office glory? Is it movies that stand the test of time, or are they ones you remember clearly long after you’ve finished watching it? Every one of us has different criteria, and every one of us will have our own lists. And of course those lists will change from time to time as well. But in most cases we can agree on whether a movie is good or not, even if they don’t make our top ten list. Regardless, here is our top ten movies from the last decade in no particular order.

The Avengers – Over the last decade we can all most likely agree that we’ve had our fill of superhero films, but 2012’s The Avengers is by far the best of the best. Sure there are longer superhero films, some with more special effects and maybe even some that are a little more important in the grand scheme of things, but none of them would have been able to exist without this one. Bringing all the heroes together in one film was a tall order, but they succeeded, and paved the way for a debate on what a good movie should be all about.

The Social Network – It’s hard to believe Facebook has been around long enough that it had a film made about its invention almost 10 years ago. While Mark Zuckerberg has tried discrediting the film, it’s the facts that are by far the most interesting thing about it. Jesse Eisenberg stars in what is perhaps his best role, and one he may not ever be able to top.

Mad Max: Fury Road – When Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome came out in 1985, it felt like the ride George Miller had taken us on over the course of three films was finally over. And it was, until Fury Road was released in 2015. From the cinematography to the editing, costumes and overall storytelling, the film demonstrated everything a good film should be. It stands out not only for what it was, but for what it wasn’t as well; that being the average Hollywood blockbuster.

Maudie – Maud Lewis is a Canadian icon, and yet not a lot of people outside the East coast of the country know her story. Sally Hawkins plays the title role in this film about an arthritic Nova Scotia woman who works as a housekeeper and eventually gets noticed for her artistic skills.

John Wick – We honestly don’t know how Keanu Reeves does it. He’s one of those rare actors that can make amazing, top of the line films of any genre, and yet is also capable of making some of the worst movies you’ve ever seen as well. John Wick is one of the former. Sure it’s over the top and a more than a little ridiculous, but it’s fun, exciting and extremely entertaining. In the end that’s what it’s all about isn’t it?

Still Mine – This true story about an elderly couple who fight New Brunswick law in order to build their final home is perhaps the most touching film of the last decade. It may not have gotten much attention outside of Canada, but it definitely should have.

True Grit – It’s very rare that a remake can be considered on a list of this kind, but True Grit is a rare kind of film. Not only is it the best Western to have come out in the last 20 years, it also introduced us to the wonderful talents of Hailee Steinfeld. While there are enough similarities between this and the original film that people compare them, it’s different enough that it stands on its own.

Paddington 2 – The best family film of the decade doesn’t go to a Disney film, or one made by Pixar, but instead to this sequel. This charming film will make you smile and help you escape your every day life for a short period of time.

Logan – While Logan is technically a superhero film, at times it doesn’t feel like one. Its gritty and dark, and feels more like a film noir than an action film. It’s the perfect send-off for Hugh Jackman who had been playing the characters since the late 90s.

The Cabin in the Woods – This film is unique in that it is a horror movie that makes fun of horror movies. The people who made it obviously love the genre, and in a way this is their tribute to it, but at the same time it stands on its own.
