Marriage Story, Chernobyl, Unbelievable and The Crown Lead The 2020 Golden Globe Nominations
Often considered to the the precursor to the awards season, the Golden Globes released their nominations this morning. On the TV side of things Unbelievable, Chernobyl and The Crown led the way with four nominations each, while on the film side it was Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story that led the way with six nods.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominees this morning, with Dakota Fanning, Susan Kelechi Watson, and Tim Allen making the announcements.
Other TV shows that got a fair number of nominations were Fosse/Verdon, The Kominsky Method, Big Little Lies, Succession, Barry, Fleabag and The Morning Show, which each received three. Was is rather surprising is that HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones only received one nomination, and that was for lead actor Kit Harington. The Handmaid’s Tale didn’t receive a single nomination at all, not did Sandra Oh, who won Best Actress in a Drama TV series last year for Killing Eve. This year’s Best TV Drama award will go to one of Big Little Lies, The Crown, Killing Eve, The Morning Show or Succession, with the Best TV Comedy going to one of Barry, Fleabag, The Kominsky Method, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel or The Politician.
For film, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood got five nominations each, while The Two Popes, Joker and 1917 were close-by with 4. One of TIFF 2019’s most praised films, Parasite, also found itself getting some attention with three nominations, with the Elton John sort of bio Rocketman also getting three. The best picture drama race will see 1917, The Irishman, Joker, Marriage Story and The Two Popes duking it out for the award, with Dolemite Is My Name, JoJo Rabbit, Knives Out, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Rocketman going for Best Drama or Comedy. Typically several of the pictures nominated for Golden Globes are also nominated for Best Picture Oscars as well.
The 77th annual Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 5th and be broadcast on NBC. Ricky Gervais returns as host for the fifth time. Until then, let the guessing games begin.
