Hobbs & Shaw Is Another Great Addition To The Fast & Furious Franchise
With there already being 8 Fast & Furious films, it was rather surprising when they announced that a spin-off for two of the characters was being made. A lot of questions came to mind before it was released too. Would it be as popular as the main series, how different would it be and would it feature the same kind of vehicular action we’ve come to expect? All those answers came pretty soon after starting to watch the film.
Hobbs & Shaw follows the story of lawman Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and outcast Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) as they are forced to team up to stop a cyber-genetically enhanced villain named Brixton (Idris Elba) who is trying to get his hands on a virus that could wipe out the human race. Between huge action sequences involving vehicles of all types (including a really cool motorbike driven by Brixton), fight scenes, and lots of one-liners, there really isn’t much room for a complicated plot. Let’s face it though, a plot really isn’t the reason you are watching this film in the first place. It’s the action that the Fast and Furious films draw people in with, and this movie is no different. The chemistry between Johnson and Statham is incredible as well, which adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the film. The chemistry was seen in the regular films, which is why this one was more than likely given the green light. Of course the supporting cast, including Ryan Reynolds, Vanessa Kirby, Helen Mirren and Kevin Hart are fun to watch as well. And whatever you do, make sure to watch the extra credit scenes. They have some of the funniest lines in the movie.
While there is over 80 minutes on bonus features on the Blu-ray, most of them are short and not very interesting. For instance one of them spends five minutes showing us Johnson’s dog who spent a day on set to film one small scene. While some may find it cute, it doesn’t really add anything to the film at all. Most of the special features are like this as well. One talks about Elba’s character and how they came up with the nickname “Black Superman”, while another looks at the action scenes. Mostly they are inconsequential fluff. While watching the deleted scenes, or alternative opening, you can quickly see as well why they were removed or changed. While for some films these kinds of things are fun to watch, it doesn’t do much for a movie that hasn’t got very much of a plot. That being said, you don’t buy this movie for the special features. You buy it for the look (amazing on blu-ray by the way), the sound (awesome on a home theatre system) and the mindless action.
Hobbs & Shaw is the perfect popcorn movie, where you sit back on your couch and enjoy it for what it is. It doesn’t require any thought, and you will be entertained for a couple of hours, even if the story is dumb. It’s the perfect addition to any collection.
