The Matrix Set To Return With Original Stars and Creators

It’s time to prepare yourself for a return trip to The Matrix. It was announced yesterday that a fourth entry into the franchise was happening at Warner Bros., and surprisingly it’s not a reboot as previously announced. It’s a continuation of the original story, with the original cast reprising their roles.

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are set to return to their roles as Neo and Trinity, and Lana Wachowski will be writing and directing the new sequel. At this point these is no word if Lilly Wachowski would be returning as well.

Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement, stating “We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana. Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”

The three previous films, The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003) have earned more than $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. Each of the films were in the Top 10 hits of their year.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first film, so it’s not surprising that the announcement was made when it was. There is no word on what the new story will be about, or when it will be made or even released.
