James Cameron Congratulates Avengers For Breaking Titanic Record
It’s no secret that James Cameron isn’t the biggest fan of superhero films being constantly pumped out. After all, last year while promoting a docuseries on AMC he stated “I’m hoping we’ll start getting Avenger fatigue here pretty soon. Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on, guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!” Now he’s also had to watch one of them, Avengers: Endgame, challenge, and beat, his records at the box office. Still, he’s taken it with a grain of salt and now has congratulated those who have beaten him.
Over the past weekend Endgame became the second highest grossing film of all time, cracking the $2 billion mark in record time. As it hit the mark, it also passed the 1997 epic, Oscar winning film Titanic. Back then Titanic made a record $2.187 billion, and it would hold the record of top grossing film until Cameron came out with Avatar in 2009. What this mean of course is that for the past 9 years, Cameron was responsible for the top 2 highest grossing films of all time. Then the Avengers struck, and claimed the second spot.
Cameron posted a photo on Twitter Wednesday evening, stating “To Kevin and everyone at Marvel. An iceberg sank the real Titanic. It took the Avengers to sink my Titanic. Everyone here at Lightstorm Entertainment salutes your amazing achievement. You’ve shown that the movie industry is not only alive and well, it’s bigger than ever!”
Currently Avengers: Endgame has grossed close to $2.3 billion worldwide, which means it’s only about $500 million behind Cameron’s Avatar. If the Avengers film continues to rule the box office and pack theaters this weekend, it could claim the highest grossing title. Regardless if it is this weekend or not, it seems like it is only a matter of time until the record falls.
