Empire Set To End After Season 6

When Empire premiered in 2015, it was an instant hit. It became Fox’s biggest premiere in 3 years, and constantly saw its numbers rise. The show was also a hit among critics. Now however, Fox is planning the series finale, which will come at the conclusion of the sixth season.

The Lee Daniels and Danny Strong created series follows the story of a fictional hip hop music and entertainment company out of New York, and the family members who fight for control of it. It stars  Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard, and has seen several big names come through in guest star roles. The show itself has had it’s fair share of backstage drama, but it was perhaps the Jussie Smollett controversy that became the most well-known. After he was charged with filing a false police report the actor was removed from the final few episodes of the season, although he wasn’t fired.  All of that is in the past now though, after Fox made their announcement this morning that the series would be wrapping up production with the next season.

Entertainment Weekly is stating that during a call with reporters, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier said “We are turning the final season into a large TV event. We are trying to go out guns a-blazing. One of the great benefits of announcing the final season is that it actually allows fans to lean in and have the ending they deserve. Six years is a remarkable run.”

Collier also went on to say that as of the moment there are no plans to bring back Smollett for the finale run, although it is still possible since the writers haven’t started putting together the episodes yet.
