A Scarlett Johansson-Led Black Widow Solo Film May Finally Be Happening
Long before last year’s Wonder Woman solo-film, and definitely before next year’s Captain Marvel film, there was another female superhero that people were wanting to see hit the big screen in a solo film. Ever since Iron Man 2 debuted Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow back in 2010 fans have been wanting to see the character get her own solo film. So far though nothing has happened, with the character only appearing as part of another hero’s film (Iron Man, Captain America), or as one of the Avengers in the hit trilogy of films. All that seems to be about to change though.
While nothing has officially been announced, it’s now being reported that Marvel Studios has begun the process of finally giving Black Widow a solo film. According to Deadline they’ve even made a shortlist of directors to helm the film. At the top of that list is Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland who directed the films Lore and Belin Syndrome, as well as episodes of Australian TV series Bad Cop, Bad Cop and The Secret Life of Us.
Not a lot is known about what Marvel films are coming out after Avengers 4, but it’s rumoured that the Marvel Universe will look a fair bit different afterwards. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios has said though that they planned on hiring a lot more female directors, and with the success of the female-led Wonder Woman it’s no surprise why. Although Captain Marvel is co-directed by a woman, Black Widow would be the first solo female director in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If indeed a Black Widow movie is finally happening, there is no doubt that Scarlett Johansson would be the star. It’s a shame though that Black Widow isn’t the first solo female superhero film in the Marvel Universe, considering she was the first female hero character to appear in the films. That of course would be Captain Marvel as well, which comes out early next year and stars Brie Larson.
