Jay-Z And Kendrick Lamar Lead Grammy Nominations

Let the guessing games and griping begin. The nominations for the 60th annual Grammy Awards were released this morning, with Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar leading the way in a mostly male dominated scene.

Jay-Z received the most nominations with eight for his album 4:44. The album is up for album of the year, and the title track, The Story of O.J., is up for song and record of the year. Kendrick Lamar received seven nominations, with Bruno Mars close by with six.

The album of the year category, the top award of the Grammy’s, will see Jay-Z’s 4:44 go up against Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic, Lorde’s Melodrama, Childish Gambino’s Awaken, My Love! and Kendrick Lamar’s Damn.

The top single earning nominations was Despacito, from Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and featuring Justin Bieber and Daddy Yankee. It has been one of the top hits of the year, and it landed  three nominations including record and song of the year.

Several female singers were noticeably absent from this year’s nominations, including Katy Perry who still hasn’t won a single Grammy, despite being one of the world’s top female performers. Taylor Swift did receive two nominations, but none for her album Reputation, which is not eligible for the Grammy’s this year since it was released in November.  Neither Beyonce nor Adele, the top female artists from last year’s Grammy’s, released new music this year either, and aren’t up for any awards. The top female nominated was R&B singer SZA who received five.

Other shocking omissions include Toronto’s Drake whose album More Life has dominated charts and radio play since being released in March, and Ed Sheeran whose album Divide only received two nominations even though it’s one of the top selling albums of the year.

The 60th Grammy Awards, will air on January 28, 2018 from New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
