Captain Marvel Pursuing Ben Mendelsohn To Play The Film’s Villain

It’s hard to believe it’s been well over a year since Brie Larson was announced to be the star of the upcoming Marvel Studios film Captain Marvel, but ever since then there hasn’t been a lot of news on the film. Of course the fact that it’s not due to hit theatres until 2019 may have something to do with that. Still bits and pieces about it have been coming out from time to time, and the latest is that Emmy-winning actor Ben Mendelsohn is in talks to join the film as the main villain.

Marvel announced in July that Captain Marvel will take place in the 1990’s, with the Skrulls, a green-skinned shape-shifting alien race, as the main protagonists. The story will be about Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), an Air Force pilot whose DNA becomes fused with alien DNA during an accident. The result gives her super strength, energy projection and flight. The film will be co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

Ben Mendelsohn has appeared in the TV series Bloodline (for which he won an Emmy in 2016), as well as numerous movies including The Dark Knight and Star Wars: Rogue One. Playing the leading villain in Captain Marvel is right up his alley, as he is well known for playing that sort of role. He can be seen next in the upcoming Winston Churchill biopic Darkest Hour and Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One.

Captain Marvel will hit theatres on March 8, 2019.
