What To See At The SXSW Film Festival

The South by Southwest conference and festivals starts this weekend in Austin Texas, and if you haven’t heard of it before you must be living under a rock. You’ll find a little bit of everything at the just over a week long event. It brings together the worlds of gaming, film and music, with everything from information sessions and sneak peaks at what is coming up in the industries, to film and music festivals. On the film side of the things, there are some interesting new movies premiering that we are bound to hear a lot about in the coming months. Here are our picks for the movies you don’t want to miss.

Song To Song: Terrence Malick has long been a favourite of critics. He’s known for The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life and Days of Heaven, and when he makes films, they are usually nominated for at least an Oscar or two. For his latest film he brought a load of talent to the table, including Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, and more. The film is perfect for the festival as well, as it focuses on the music scene of Austin Texas, and tells the story of two musicians looking to catch their break into the industry. The film took several years to shoot, and looks to be an early shoo-in for an Oscar nom. It’s no surprise this film opens the festival.

Atomic Blonde: Even more exciting than a new Terrence Malick film, is the chance to see Charlize Theron kick ass in this film based on the graphic novel. She plays an undercover MI6 agent during the Cold War who is sent into Berlin to recover a missing list of double agents. James McAvoy and John Goodman star in this film that is sure to turn a lot of heads, and could very well be the start of a new franchise.

Life: Ryan Reynolds is on top of the world after his hugely successful film Deadpool, and for his latest flick he teams up with two of his Deadpool writers. It follows the story of a team of astronauts who find themselves in danger after discovering life on Mars. Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson costar in this closing night film.

Baby Driver: Edgar Wright hasn’t made a movie since 2013 when he released the final movie of his Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy,  The World’s End. The film stars Ansel Elgort as a getaway driver who finds himself taking part in a heist that is doomed to fail. Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Kevin Spacey, Jon Bernthal, and Lily James co-star.

SXSW 2017 runs from March 10 – 19th in Austin Texas.
