Films You Need To See Before The 2017 Oscars
The 2017 Academy Awards are right around the corner, and thankfully a long weekend falls just before them, giving us all a chance to catch up on the nominated films we’ve missed. After all, you want to understand what all the fuss is about don’t you? Not everything that is nominated is going to win something, but several of the films will win at least one award. Here are the films that you simply can’t miss.
La La Land: Damien Chazelle’s tribute to LA is sure to be the big winner of the night, and will more than likely take home the Best Picture and Best Director Awards. There’s a very good chance Emma Stone will take home the Best Actress statuette, and there is even a possibility that Ryan Gosling will be named Best Actor. This musical really is a treat for the eyes and is well worth the money and time spent watching it.
Fences: Denzel Washington has quickly risen to the top of the list when it comes to who will win the Best Actor Award, and Viola Davis is almost a shoe-in to win Best Supporting Actress. This film simply wouldn’t be the same without the two of them. The film is about an African American father raising his family in the 1950s, while dealing with several issues of his own.
Hell or High Water: While this film may not win any awards on the big night, it should win an award for the most under rated. This modern western is about a pair of brothers who hatch a scheme to save their family ranch. It’s been nominated for 4 Oscars, and will probably be the movie most people haven’t seen yet.
Manchester By The Sea: Manchester by the Sea is one of those movies you will probably only ever see once, but it will leave a lasting impression on you. Casey Affleck was the front runner for the Best Actor Award, but he faces stiff competition if he is going to win it. It’s the story of a man reluctantly drawn back to his home town to take care of his nephew after his brother suddenly passes away.
Elle: If there is going to be a surprise this year, Elle’s Isabelle Huppert could be it. She shocked viewers at the Golden Globes by taking home the Best Actress Drama award, and could very well take home the Best Actress award at the Oscars as well. This French film is about a business woman tracking down the unknown man who raped her. This powerful movie should have been nominated for Best Picture as well.
Moonlight: No one saw the Moonlight juggernaut coming, at least not until it was released. The film received 8 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress. It’s the story of a young black man, from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his way in the world.
