Gianna Martello Of “Dance Moms” On Season 7, Choreography And Abby Lee Miller

With the Season 6 finale of Dance Moms airing tonight, we took a few minutes to catch up with one of the stars of the hit show, Gianna Martello. The 27-year-old dancer was once a student herself at the Abby Lee Miller Dance Company, and now works as an assistant choreographer at the school. The talented Martello spilled on her experience with Dance Moms, which waltzed into the television world in 2011 with its premiere season. Today, the Lifetime reality series has produced rising success stories like 14-year-old Maddie Ziegler. Despite the wild routines, dramatic performances and passionate arguments which have brought Dance Moms to centre stage, there’s no denying that the show has also highlighted this art form.

Staying true to her love of dance, Martello spoke to us about working with the famously fiery-tempered Abby Lee Miller, the upcoming Season 7 of the show and her creative inspiration.

Watch Dance Moms tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Real Style: Since it premiered in 2011, Dance Moms has been a massive hit. What do you think it is about the show that got fans so hooked?

Gianna: I think it’s everyone’s guilty pleasure but it’s definitely the girls that everyone fell in love with! They were so little and so talented! The moms were crazy and Abby was definitely a force. It all just worked.

Real Style: What changes have you noticed in the dance world since Dance Moms has been on the air?

Gianna: I think that non-dancers are so much more aware of the dance world. So many more kids are dancing because of our show. Whether people want to admit it or not, Dance Moms has made dance and choreography topics of discussion everywhere.

Real Style: Abby Lee Miller can definitely come across as intense on the show. What’s something about her that fans might be surprised to know?

Gianna: She’s one of the most generous people I know! She would do anything for any of her students. She made Macy’s let us in after they closed because I needed a pair of heels for an interview.

Real Style: What type of music gets you dancing?

Gianna: Anything! Stuff on the radio, stuff that isn’t so mainstream, a good, dramatic lyrical. Literally anything! When someone tells me to pick my favorite song, I never can.

Real Style: Where do you find inspiration for your choreography?

Gianna: So many different places! It could be a situation I recently experienced, a show I’ve seen, a place I’ve been, a song I hear and I can just picture the routine as soon as I see it. Sometimes just the kids I’m working with inspire me!

Real Style: How do you spend your much deserved down time when you’re not choreographing?

Gianna: Shopping! And pampering myself. Retail therapy always does the trick. We don’t work on Mondays, so you can always find me in a mall or in a nail salon.

Real Style: With Season 6 coming to an end, what can we expect from Season 7 of Dance Moms?

Gianna: Season 6 has a crazy ending, but I can tell you that season seven has some of the best routines you’ve ever seen on Dance Moms! We even have one that gets a perfect score. We don’t have all of our minis back, but we have some new dancers that you are going to love!

Real Style: Do you have any new projects coming up?

Gianna: I just worked on a new music video with Alexx Calise featuring [one of the students on Dance Moms] Nia Sioux ! I believe we are going to finish out Season 7, starting in January. Then, fingers always crossed for Season 8!
