Top Songs You Never Knew Were Written By Prince
When you think of Prince, your first thoughts probably turn towards his hits like Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, 1999, and many, many others. The 57 year old artist who passed away yesterday wrote songs for many artists though, including several hit songs that you might not be aware that he wrote.
Manic Monday by The Bangles: This song is perhaps the most well known single by the Susanna Hoffs led female band, and it wasn’t even a song originally meant for them. Prince wrote it in 1984 as a duet for another band, and when it wasn’t used, he offered it to The Bangles. His name didn’t appear in the writing credit though. He’s listed instead as Christopher.
Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O’Connor: Other than being known for tearing up a photo of the Pope during a performance on Saturday Night Live, it can be argued that Sinead O’Connor’s place in history is cemented with this song. This 1990 song was originally written for a side project, but when it wasn’t used Prince offered it to Sinead. And the rest, is as they say, history.
Love Song by Madonna: While this song may not have been a big hit for the Material Girl, we mention it because not only did Prince co-write the track off her 1989 album Like A Prayer with Madonna, but he sang and played guitar on the track.
Stand Back by Stevie Nicks: This single was a top five hit for the former Fleetwood Mac singer, and according to Nicks she was inspired to write it after listening to Prince’s Little Red Corvette. Before she recorded it though, she called Prince and talked to him about the song. He showed up that night while she was recording it, and helped her finish the track. He even helped out with some of the synth backing.
How Come U Don’t Call Me? by Alicia Keys: Ok, maybe in this case if you are a big Prince fan you will know that he wrote this song. After all he released it as a b-side to his single 1999 in 1982. But the song wasn’t a hit for him, and would have faded away if not for Alicia Keys deciding to cover it in 2002.
