Idris Elba And Matthew McConaughey Confirmed To Star In The Dark Tower

After several false starts, Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series is set to begin production, and the author himself confirmed that Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey will star in it.

If you are a casual Stephen King fan you might know him only for his horror, but there is much more to the man than that. Over the years he’s not only written horror, but has also been the man behind such hit movies as The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. His magnum opus though is a fantasy western series called The Dark Tower that spans eight novels, comic books, short stories and is referenced throughout several of his other books. Once thought to be unfilmable, the series is set to start production with Idris Elba starring as the gunslinger Roland, and Matthew McConaughey as the mysterious man in black he’s chasing.

“The thing is, it’s been a looong trip from the books to the film,” King told EW. “When you think about it, I started these stories as a senior in college, sitting in a little sh-tty cabin beside the river in Maine, and finally this thing is actually in pre-production now.” He laughs. “I’m delighted, and I’m a little bit surprised.”

Fans of the series know that the books transcend time, from the real world, to a future world, and even the past. The books start in the middle with Roland all ready on his quest to hunt down the man in black, and the movie will start the same. Director Nikolaj Arcel told EW though that a lot of the movie will take place in the modern world, but he’s not willing to say which of the books the first movie will cover.

Other than McConaughey and Elba, only Mad Max:Fury Road’s Abbey Lee has been in talks for any of the other roles.
