Supergirl takes flights tonight on CBS and Global. Ever since it was announced in the spring, the series quickly became one of the most buzzed about new shows of the fall. Melissa Benoist of Glee is playing the titular role, but she wasn’t the first actress to wear the cape and skirt. Find out who played Supergirl first, and other facts about this hot new show.
After the release of the third Superman movie in 1983, it was unsure if Christopher Reeve would be returning to the popular role, so in order to try and build off the success of the series it was decided to move forward with a Supergirl spinoff starring Helen Slater. The movie was a huge bomb however, and after its release any plans for a sequel were quickly scrapped.
Former Real Style cover girl Laura Vandervoort played Supergirl on The CW’s hit series Smallville starting with season 7. She’d make several appearances throughout the series, including an episode in season 10. She never appeared in the comic book costume, but fans never complained.
Supergirl first appeared in comics in 1959 as a supporting character in the Superman series of titles. The character didn’t receive her own title until 1972, but it only lasted two years. She received a second series in 1982, but again after two years it was cancelled.
DC Comics killed off Supergirl in 1985 during a huge comic book event, and the character changed identities several times until the current version was created in 2004. The latest incarnation is similar to the original Kara Zor-El.
Supergirl is the first TV series to be based around a female superhero since the 1970’s Wonder Woman starring Lynda Carter.
