Blake Lively Wasn’t The First Choice To Play Serena van der Woodsen On Gossip Girl

You’ve heard this sort of thing before, Tom Selleck was all set to play Indiana Jones but had to back out, Eric Stoltz was cast and even filmed some scenes as Marty Mcfly, and now Gossip Girls’ casting director David Rapaport has revealed that the network didn’t originally think of Blake Lively for the role of Serena van der Woodsen.

In a recent interview with Buzzfeed Rapaport said “I feel like you go back and think, There is nobody else that could have played these characters. I think the network initially pitched us Ashley Olsen and Rumer Willis…” Rapaport knew in the end however that Lively was perfect for the role. “Blake Lively was literally the only person I could think of for Serena. I had seen her in Accepted and at that time, there were no Lena Dunhams or Zooey Deschanels — it was all about beauty and glamour, but being approachable and Blake was the ultimate It Girl. I was terrified we wouldn’t get her or they wouldn’t like her because, honestly, they show lived and died on her and I had absolutely no other ideas. And I read so many people. I think at the end of the day, we tested Blake, Katie Cassidy, who is now on Arrow, and this girl who was [Serena] on the Gossip Girl books. Not even her face, just her legs. But it made sense.”

Rumer Willis was surprised that Rapaport said she was wanted by the network, telling People that “You know, it was actually totally news to me. I felt like I did an awful audition back then. I was so young and it was, like, one of the first things I’d ever auditioned for.” Willis went on to say that she was a huge fan of the books, and thought that Blake did an incredible job playing the role.

We have a hard time imaging anyone else playing the role of Serena on Gossip Girl. How about you?
